A Newport firefighter climbs a ladder holding Hank the golden retriever on Tuesday.

Fire department personnel were called to rescue Hank after he fell into a partially covered well.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter plucked an injured man from Yaquina Bay’s south jetty Sunday after a wave crashed him up onto the rocks.

Coast Guard 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Yaquina Bay was on the scene when fire and medical personnel arrived.

They found an injured man about halfway up the north side of the south jetty, and determined that a helicopter would be the best means of rescue due to the difficulty in traversing the jetty rocks with a stretcher in tow. Waves can also crash across the jetty even during relatively calm seas.

Stranded sea turtles get another chance!

A stranded sea turtle’s prognosis is always guarded. As marine reptiles, sea turtles rely on their surroundings for warmth.

When these animals get caught in Oregon’s cold waters, they experience cold stunning, rendering them incapable of eating or navigating.

Turtles can float in a cold-stunned state for weeks, and often sustain physical injury, infection and dehydration before washing ashore.

Cold currents and storms can act as catalysts for sea turtle strandings, so frequency increases during the fall and winter months.

The turtles were transported to the aquarium for initial care, then on to Seaward where they will continue to recuperate until they can be released into the wild.

Aquarium officials said the Olive Ridley sea turtle is an endangered species, making Pumpkin and Joanie’s survival even more crucial.
