The Mississippi River is the principal river of the largest river system in North America. Running exclusively through the United States (though its water basin reaches Canada), it flows from northern Minnesota and slowly moves south for 4,070 km to the Mississippi River Delta in the Gulf of Mexico. With its many tributaries, the river basin supplies water to all or parts of thirty-one U.S. states and two Canadian provinces between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians.
