It's hatching season! What happens inside the sea turtle nest, you ask? This graphic is a great illustration of eggs incubating , ( panel 1) for an average of 60 days in the 2 foot deep nest that the nesting female dug out. Then in 2, 3, and 4, notice that the hatchlings begin to emerge from their eggs by tearing them open, and they make their way to the top of the nest leaving the empty eggshells at the bottom of the nest. When the hatchlings are all ready near the top of the nest, 5 and 6, and the hatchlings sense the cool night temperature, a hatchling breaks through the surface layer of sand and the others follow in a frenzy. They push against each other and against the side walls of the nest chamber , their flippers help them ascend , and they emerge in a mass of hatchlings! This is called a hatchling boil as it looks like they are bubbling up from the sandy beach. It is a spectacular feat! Just under 20 nests have hatched on HHI.
