Some today do not realize the important role Asian cultures played in the history and economy of Louisiana. People from countries in Asia immigrated here long before the era following the Viet Nam war. In the mid-1800s Filipinos settled in Lafitte and called their settlement Manila Village. Manila Village was moved in 1895 to Barataria Bay, where it was the largest of its type. Filipinos, Chinese and Mediterranean Europeans used the bounty of the Gulf for survival and business. Most lived across the bay at Cabinash Island. Manilla Village was situated on 50 acres of marsh located to the southeast of Lafitte, to the north of Grand Isle, and to the south of Myrtle Grove. It was home to about a dozen structures built up on silts to protect against rising waters. The buildings were painted green and had red roofs. The fishermen were experts at drying shrimp for preservation and built a series of platforms that had slopes and valleys. The dried shrimp could then be shipped to far away places. The platforms spread out across the bay, and other areas, such as Terrebonne Parish, also developed a dried shrimp industry. Locally, these places just became known as "The Platforms." Besides the platforms, Manila Village had warehouses, a fuel dock, night-shelters for workers, and even a post office. It was completely destroyed by Hurricane Betsey in 1965 and was not rebuilt.
