Even while you're on your dream trip, you still want to make sure that you're maximizing your resources. Here are 5 of the things I do to get the most value:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Currency exchange at any airport is really a scam; the rates are bound to be unfavorable. I prefer to withdraw money from a local ATM or from my bank before going on the trip.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. In some countries, you may get the option to pay in the local currency or a common currency (e.g. USD or euro), ALWAYS choose the local currency (for cash & card transactions) because, similar to 1., the exchange rate you'd get by paying in international currency will be worse.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. By eating where locals eat, you not only learn about the culture, you also spend less on food. I've found that food establishments catered to tourists are usually more expensive. I may eat 1 or 2 "fancy" meals on a trip but I try to seek out local establishments.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. I try to have an idea of how much things cost before and during my trip so I don't get scammed. For example, it helps me to know how much a taxi should cost from the airport to my accommodation so I can negotiate if needed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. This one you'd have to do before your trip but travel insurance has come in handy to save me money when unforseen things happened during my trip. So even though it can be an additional expense, I'm still a huge proponent.
