Today is Samhain, the day when the Celts and Picts believed the ancient spirits were closest to the earth. Gifts from the harvest were left at the burial cairns to appease the spirits and guisers took them there. You dressed in disguise so the ancients didn't recognise you and whisk you off to the spirit realm. You danced, sang, laughed to cheer the spirits. This is why we dress up, and do a party-piece here in Scotland. We've been doing it far longer than America, so let's go Guisin', not Trick or Treating. They were getting into the spirit of things at the Hill House (either that or they have a terrible infestation of spiders!)

I've been very quiet of late, just getting on with life and forgetting to post. I tend to immerse myself in an experience and forget to take photos. However, it's been a busy old summer with City Sightseeing Glasgow and private tours as Glasgow Tour Guide. My lovely mum joined me yesterday on a day off at the Scottish Crannog Centre and took masses of photos. I wore my early medieval costume, which easily doubles for the iron age but she clearly avoided taking photos of me because she thought I was bonkers 🤣

It's been a busy old summer, despite all seeming quiet online. I tend to immerse myself in an experience and forget to take photos or post about them. Yesterday on a day off Mr Glasgow Tour Guide took my lovely mum and I to one of my favourite places, where I get to geek out with other people who love history and prehistory. I can dress for the time period and truly immerse myself for a day and it passes so quickly. My mum loves taking photos, so I can share this special place with you all 💕

I had the most wonderful day yesterday at the Scottish Crannog Centre and met the lovely Julie and many many more. I made one of these peg boards and geeked out with lots of people who love history and prehistory 💕

Very excited about my "new" book. Where possible I go green by buying pre-loved books from World of Books, Ebay, charity shops etc. This came recommended by another tour guide and it doesn't disappoint 💕 Maps, photos and history from the 1200s - 1996 geeking out 💕

Today is your last opportunity to visit the People's Palace before closure for 3 years. The building and winter gardens are desperately needing some TLC. I'm sure that the exhibits will change so hopefully my favourites will remain 🥰

Had a wee day oot to The Scottish Crannog Centre. First weekend opening at the new site and it was AMAZING! Obviously not everything is built yet, but we were shown iron age cooking, blacksmithing, woodworking and textile working. I even got to try my hand at pottery work. I think there will be quite a wait for the first of 3 crannogs to be built. To be honest though, it would be worth the trip for the brownies alone. I'm now a Friend of the centre and it only cost me £30 for the year. You can also get joint and family packs. Definitely worth it. Thanks to the whole team 💕

We went to Culross today and it's a fabulous little town. I haven't been there for around 25 years. It was great to be back, but the highlight of the day was meeting Andy the Highlander for the first time. He's a fellow tour guide I've followed for years.

The Medieval and Necropolis Tour will include the oldest home in Glasgow for the first time in around two years. I can't say how excited I am about Provand's Lordship reopening over the Easter Weekend 💕 The new harling is authentic to it's original. It will be interesting to see what they've done with the interior. Book yourself on one of our tours at www.glasgowtourguide.com

Today is St Mungo's Day and the ideal opportunity to share one of my favourite murals in Glasgow. This is St Mungo by Smug (Sam Bates). I love the fact that he is lit from outwith and within. He's performing his first miracle of bringing a robin back to life. The bird was the pet of St Serf, Mungo's tutor.

It's a pretty new thing to wish a Happy Hogmanay in Scotland. The 31st of December is a normal working day here and traditionally one of the hardest days for the womenfolk. After the reformation of the church in Scotland Roman Catholicism was banned. All the saints days, feast days and even Christmas were banned. These were Roman Catholic holy days where people got a day off, paid or unpaid and that's where the word holiday comes from. Christmas was the day of the mass to celebrate the Christchild's birth. A time of light and celebrations including pagan festivities even more abhorrent to the Presbyterian Scots. Banned in winter, when let's face it you need light and something to celebrate. In comes the celebrations of New Year's Day or Ne'er Day as we call it. The entire house was prepared for the special day on Hogmanay. An especially good clean, all the washing and ironing up to date, soups, steak pies, black bun and shortbread made. I love the stage show "The Steamie" set in a Glasgow wash-house known as a steamie for obvious reasons. It shows the hard work done by the "wimmen" (women) back then. Anyhoo, I'm having a lazy day and I wish all my customers, colleagues and followers a very Happy New Year when it comes ###
