Today Greece celebrates Theophany also known as Epiphany, “Theofania” or “Phota” in Greek, which marks the commemoration of the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan. It is a significant religious holiday in the Greek Orthodox Church and is considered the last day of the Christmas season.

Early in the morning, the priest conducts a special ceremony called the Great Blessing of Waters. A cross is blessed and then thrown into the sea, river, or lake. Young men dive into the water to retrieve the cross, and the person who successfully catches it is said to have good luck for the year.

On November 8th, we remember the Liberation of Mytilene, a pivotal event when Lesvos broke free from the Ottoman rule in 1912.🇬🇷

This significant occasion stands as a testament to the island's enduring spirit and the journey toward independence.

Also, here on Lesvos we celebrate the Synaxis or gathering of Angels and Archangels. The magnificent Taxiarchis Monastery is the focus for this worship. It’s also the Name Day to celebrate the names Taxiarchis, Michalis, Angelos, and many more.

It is worth visiting Lesvos around November 8th, with the celebratory atmosphere and the vibrant parades that create a joyful and lively ambiance on the island, plus it’s also the week of the Chestnut Festival at Agiasos and the month for harvesting olives!

Around 6km from Plomari along the coast lies the pretty seaside village of Melinta or Melinda. It is a beautiful beach with a couple of traditional tavernas ( open in peak season). The water here is so clear and aquamarine, it's an ideal spot for swimming and snorkelling. The large rock has been said to make the beach feel like you're on an exotic beach in Thailand! If you're lucky you can see Maria cleaning the fresh local catch ready to be served in the beach-front taverna.

On October 28th, Greece commemorates Oxi Day, also known as "Anniversary of the No." This national holiday holds great historical significance as it marks Greece's response to an ultimatum given by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in 1940 during World War II. Mussolini demanded that Greek forces allow Axis troops to enter Greek territory or face war.

In a resolute and heroic gesture, the Greek leader Ioannis Metaxas responded with a single word, "Ohi," meaning "No" in Greek. This bold refusal to surrender marked the beginning of Greece's involvement in World War II.

Parades, ceremonies, and other events are held throughout Greece to honor the memory of this pivotal moment in history.

Agiassos is one of the most beautiful villages on the Greek island of Lesvos and is nestled on the slopes of Mount Olympus, around 35km from the island's capital, Mytilene, with amazing lush green, mountain views down to the azure Aegean sea.

It is a traditional village of winding stone streets and pretty buildings with balconies, painted soft pastel shades. There are several cafes, tavernas and shops selling local produce and pottery.

Pilgrims visit the village all year round to go to the church of the Virgin Mary, Panagia ti Vrefokratousa, and it is specially visited on the 15th August each year as Greece celebrates with the festival of Panagia.

The picturesque village of Petra on the island of Levos is iconic with visitors and locals due to the towering volcanic rock formation from which the village takes its name - Petra meaning ‘rock’ in Greek. The Church of Panagia Glykofilousa perches on the top of the rock - an architectural marvel dating back to the 18th century. In the south of Lesvos, accessible by sea (or a long coastal hike!) visitors can discover ‘Panagia Krifti’, the chapel appropriately termed ‘the Virgin Mary in Hiding’. Hidden high among the jagged rocks that rise up from the azure sea this small church in a picture-perfect inlet is worth visiting! The remote setting makes it even more magical and it is a very special boat trip from the nearby Plomari. The rocks are also above an inactive volcano so there are hot springs as warm water surfaces into a small pool. It's a very special place to visit!
