𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙬𝙖𝙮

Norway’s Christmas traditions are based on both Christian as well as having some elements of old pagan aspects.

🎄𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - for all the die hard Christmas lovers who grapples with how soon you can decorate without being mocked, you are in good company. Norwegians start decorating for Christmas at the ending of November.

The streets are lined with lights, the city is buzzing with Christmas shoppers, the Christmas markets are open and you may be able catch a concert.

🎄𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗘𝘃𝗲 (𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟯𝗿𝗱)- this tradition is celebrated at home which consists of tree decorating, making a gingerbread house and eating risengrynsgrøt.

🎄 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗿𝘆𝗻𝘀𝗴𝗿ø𝘁- a hot rice pudding served with sugar, cinnamon and butter. An almond is hidden in the pudding and if your bowl have the almond then you win a marzipan pig.

In the countryside many people put the pudding outside for the barn gnome. In the morning, if it is not eaten by the barn gnome they will make a cold rice pudding with whipped cream called riskrem.

🎄𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀- most Norwegians believe the night before Christmas, bad witches and spirits will come out, if they find your broomsticks, they will take them and fly through the skies.

🎄 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗘𝘃𝗲 - at 5:00pm the bell rings which indicates the time to celebrate. Shops and bars are closed and most people eat dinner at home or with their relatives. Eating pork ribs or pork belly, dried cured ribs of lamb, boiled cod, lutefisk (cod cured in lye) and malty beer (juleøl) are just a few traditional dishes.

From Christmas Day until New Year’s Eve, Norwegians typically spend their days and evenings going out to brunch and dinner with family and friends.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨

The Philippines has the longest Christmas season which starts from September and ends in January. Read below for an insight of a few of their Christmas traditions.

🎄 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲 - they call it 𝘽𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣. Okay, this is not really different from most cultures, but the difference is their Belen is setup everywhere instead of just a church or religious places

🎄𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗹- in addition to traditional Christmas lights, their unique ornament is shaped in a big circle with a star in the middle

🎄𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗮𝗯𝗶- this is a mass where Filipinos attend really late at night or very early in the morning for 9 days before Christmas.

🎄𝗡𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗮 - Filipinos often wake up at midnight to welcome Christmas Day with this lavish feast of traditional dishes

🎄𝗡𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗮- another lavish feast at the end of the year. Filipinos adorn their table with food usually formed into round shapes and 12 round fruits which is believed to bring in good fortune. They also make loud sounds which is believed to ward off bad spirits before entering the new year.

🎄𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 - celebrated on the first Sunday in January. This marks the last day of their very long Christmas season, where they celebrate the three kings who went to visit Jesus’ manger

These are just a few traditions mentioned. The key pillars of the Filipino culture is family centered and filled with wonderful traditions, food and ongoing festivities. Celebrating Christmas from September to January is an amazing way to end a year and start a new one. Maligayang Pasko!

It’s the Most Wonderful time of the year

Christmas is my favorite holiday. I revert to my beautiful childhood days in Jamaica with sorrel brewing, family laughter, Jamaican black cake, Santa Claus, gifts and eating, lots of eating.
Everyone was so festive with laugjter in the air and a “Merry Christmas“ cheer from across the way. It was and always will be my favorite time of year.

Virtually travel with me to view Christmas practices around the world.

𝙈𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙨

I have been to Paris quite a few times and I have to admit, I have been to this restaurant Anhuacalli each time I visited.

True confession: I am not a big fan of French food 😱 I know, I know it sounds crazy. Who goes to another country and avoid eating their food? I do!! Aside from croissants, croque monsieur or frites, nothing else really excites my palate. So this restaurant falls right into place.

Anhuacalli is located on Rue de Bernardins in the Latin Quarter district, a few blocks away from Notre Dame. It is a small restaurant (reservation is suggested) with great ambience and good Yucatán style food.
_
Usually with great deliberation over the menu, I never order anything different from what I ate the last time. What is the point of that? Who knows, but that is what I do.
_
My feasting journey starts with an order of freshly made guacamole and chips (sometimes adding salt is needed) which pairs well with their margarita.

After which I order the cactus salad to fill in the gap. My main course of choice has always been Enchiladas (note: if you are a person who loves spicy food, you should ask for their spicy sauce). At the end of each meal, after bursting at the seams, a steamy cup of coffee is what dreams are made of.
_
Hopefully, we get to revisit Paris in the future, and if it is on your travel list for 2021 check out this Mexican restaurant.
What is your favorite non-French food in France?

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙄𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙮- 𝙑𝙞𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙜𝙞𝙤

My very first introduction to Italy was in this beautiful city. I was there to study Italian history as well as the language. It was an amazing time of my life and it was the reason why I decided to relocate to Italy.

Viareggio is the largest beach town in the Tuscan region and the southernmost Italian Riviera. Its Liberty-style buildings is closely similar to Baroque style.

Its promenade is filled with seafood restaurants, cafes and shops. It is also known for holding one of the top, wildly ornate carnevale in the region.

𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚

Pisa International is the closest airport to Viareggio and is approximately 14.5 miles away. From the airport you have the option of taking a 48 minute bus ride or train or you can rent a car which is a 25 minute drive.

From Rome, take the Trenitalia to Pisa Centrale (two and a half hours) then transfer to the local train to Viareggio (thirty minutes).

𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤:
* Walk along the seafront promenade filled with shops, restaurants and cafes
* In the summer take the ferry and spend the day in Cinque Terre (must do)
* Visit Villa Puccini, the last villa of the composer
* Rent a bicycle and ride along the promenade and visit other beach towns
* Enjoy the beach

Imagine sitting on the beach in the sweltering summer heat with the white covered peak of the Apuan Alps as your backdrop. That was Viareggio summed up.

If you are looking for an off the beaten path town with long beaches, great shopping and a lively nightlife, put one of my favorite Italian towns on your must visit list in 2021. Hit the link in my bio above ☝🏽to contact me, I can show you Viareggio through my eyes.

Most airlines try to overcharge you $20-$50 to sit in the front of the plane. Here is a quick tip on how to change your seat without paying:

✈️ Reserve a random seat online and upon your arrival at the airport let the agent know you would like to be seated at the front of the plane. If the flight is not sold out they will change your seat at your request.

Sitting in the front is also helpful when flying international, because it allows you to be one of the ones to deplane first and you can beat the crowd at the immigration line.

That is today’s quick travel tip. If you are planning to travel in the future, hit the link in my bio above ☝🏽to contact me. I am happy to help you coordinate your tailor-made luxury getaway.

𝙍𝙮𝙚, 𝙀𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙪𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙭, 𝙐𝙆

I adore storybook-esque villages. I love to fill my mind with childhood fantasies while sauntering through a town. The village in Rye, Sussex reminds me of such imaginations.

With cobblestone streets and timbered houses with terracotta roofs, the village of Rye will leave you breathless From climbing the church tower of St. Mary’s to browsing antique bookstores you will not be disappointed.

With a two hour train ride from London, St. Pancras add this off the beaten path village to your “must-visit” list.
For future travels to the U.K., if you are yearning for more bucolic getaways, hit the link in my bio to contact me for a tailor-made luxury trip.
