Beautiful specimen of Nalanda Heritage Nalanda housed at the Indian Museum, Kolkata (Ministry of Culture, Government of India).

Artefact Name: Birth of Siddartha
Period: C. 10th Century CE, Pala School
Accession No.: 8670/ A24254
Material: Black Stone
Provenance: Nalanda, Bihar

Brief Description: The sculpture depicts Queen Maya Devi standing next to a Sala tree, with slight body flexion. The bejewelled lady is accompanied by three-headed Brahma, the creator of the universe and four-armed Vishnu, the preserver. To the left of the lady is a small statuette of the Buddha standing on five lotuses, symbolizing the seven steps of his birth. Indra, the lord of heaven, who received the child after birth, is shown on the right side holding a cloth. In the background, two devotees are seated on the pedestal, with a female attendant on the left. A fine specimen of the Pala School of the early medieval Pala School, the sculpture illustrates the legend in great detail. Indian Museum, Kolkata received this sculpture from renowned American historian, Dr Stellar Krimmisch in August 1933.
