History while hiking in Donegal - Although Ireland officially remained neutral during WWII, De Valera offered concessions with regards to flight paths for allied aircraft using bases in Northern Ireland. This would later become known as the Donegal corridor.
During the course of WW2 a number of allied planes crash landed in the Donegal highlands and other counties such as Sligo, Mayo and Leitrim. While the majority of wreckages were recovered, some signs still remain in areas more remote and difficult to access.
On April 11th 1941, 6 airmen tragically lost their lives in dense fog on the Urris hills in Inishowen. It is believed that they mistook Lough Swilly for Lough Foyle on their return approach to the airfield at Limavady.
A makeshift memorial was made at the crash site to those that died. Although not easily accessed, it is possible to hike to the area if completing the Urris Hills Rridgeline walk (https://www.hikingdonegal.com/urris-hills) or the Urris Lakes looped walk (https://www.hikingdonegal.com/urris-lakes-loop-walk) (Crash site location - OSI Map 3, grid ref: C296 414)
