Do you know the origin of the "Casamentos de Santo Antonio"? 👰🤵
Every 12 June, the Lisbon City Council offers the possibility to 16 couples to get married for free and thus unite their destiny under the protection of Saint Anthony, at the Sé 💒
The tradition dates back to 1958 and was thought to "make marriage possible for couples with greater economic difficulties".

Today is the bank holidays in Portugal, otherwise known as "Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities Day" 🇵🇹
The date of 10 June was chosen as a tribute to the famous Portuguese author Luís de Camões, who died on the same day in 1580.
Considered one of the greatest names in Portuguese literature, he told the story of Portugal and more specifically of Vasco da Gama's discovery of the sea route to India in one of the most important works for the Portuguese people: the Lusiads. 📖

In the heart of the Baixa, don't miss the Elevador de Santa Justa! 🙌
Built under the direction of engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, this neo-Gothic inspired lift opened its doors to the public in 1902.
At 45 metres high, it allows you to get to the Largo do Carmo, from where the view over Lisbon is magnificent. 🌇

Today is Freedom Day in Portugal 🇵🇹
We commemorate the 1974 Revolution that led to the fall of the Estado Novo, the dictatorship founded by Antonio de Oliveira Salazar.
On 25 April 1974, as Renascença radio broadcast the song "Grândola, Vila Morena", at the time banned by the regime, the revolution was underway. That same day, a restaurant was to celebrate the anniversary of its inauguration. For the occasion, many carnations had been planned, but circumstances forced it to remain closed. Céleste Caeiro, then an employee of the restaurant, saw herself leaving with the flowers and offered them to the soldiers she passed 🌹
The latter placed them on the barrels of their rifles, thus making this flower a symbol of the Revolution which has since been named the Carnation Revolution.

Do you know the history of Ginja, the traditional Morello cherry liqueur from Portugal? 🍒
It is said to have spread in Lisbon in the 19th century thanks to the opening of two bars serving Ginja exclusively at the counter.
But behind these two establishments, there is actually a betrayal between two families, and therefore a great rivalry. 🤭
To know the history and taste the best Ginja in the world, you can book a visit with Visitmylisbon👇

How about a Fado evening? 🎶
You can't come to Lisbon without listening to a tune!
This spontaneous song, inviting the artist to release his strongest emotions, is said to have arrived from Brazil in the 19th century. Since then, it has never left the people of Lisbon. 🪕
To listen it, we recommend the Restaurante Casa de Linhares - Fados, where you can also enjoy delicious Portuguese food.
To help you discover Fado, Monlisbonne has written an article in which you will find the best addresses, the link is here 👇
