We are making your 1 January even more special! 💫 Today we open the doors of free exhibition Turner in January: Ireland's Vaughan Bequest 🎨 Celebrating the magic of British artist JMW Turner, born 250 years ago!

Did you know that Turner’s scenic watercolours often went on to become affordable prints, books, and portfolios?

Prints were more affordable and accessible to a much wider audience than pictures displayed in an exhibition. This watercolour of the Mewstone, a rocky island off the Devon coast, was created for the print series Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England and published in 1815. These works provided an armchair for travel for many in the early 19th century, almost like scrolling through your social media feed today!

The first owner of this watercolour, Turner’s stockbroker (and also Charles Darwin’s stockbroker) Charles Stokes, was particularly struck by the wisps of white clouds in the dark sky. He ‘asked Turner if he did not mean them for the demons and angels of the storm’ and Turner confessed that he did.
