An incredible moment captured by @dereckjoubert, watching on as lion cubs navigate the watery landscapes of the Okavango Delta, learning to live, hunt and thrive from a young age!

Walking into 2022... 🐘 We love this incredible moment captured by @dereckjoubert
As Dereck says: "Even feline royalty must defer to the giant of the African savannah. And it's quite judicious for elephants to treat large predators with wary hostility. Even when the danger isn't immediately personal, elephants know too well the threat that lions can pose to weaker or younger herd-mates. Animosity is warranted" - we couldn't have worded it better!

This is devastating news. Africa relies on tourism. The devastation of the past two years on these nations is utterly overwhelming. Just as there was a glimmer of hope and renewed optimism for international travel.
The camps, lodges and safari outfitters in Africa are much more then nice places for us to stay - they are, in no small way, huge philanthropic endeavours, supporting and in large parts are the main (or only) funding source for their communities; actively running schools, hospitals, funding scholarships, feeding communities, protecting vast swathes of wilderness and are often the main/only source of employment in under serviced regions.
They have done it so so tough. There are no furlough or jobkeeper schemes here. No welfare in any form.
This knee jerk reaction of a total ban for all of southern Africa is politically and economically motivated, it is easy to use Africa as a scapegoat. The travel bans have purely endeavoured to create a false sense of security, giving cover to elected leaders who want to answer political pressures, and it is much easier to be seen to be doing something, particularly when the social and economic ramifications of those actions affect those in far flung places with very little voice and power. The lacklustre sequencing efforts of many nations means that this variant is likely to have been spreading globally for sometime already and is not limited to southern Africa.
What can we do:
Do not strike off Africa from your travel list, keep it front of mind - you won’t regret it. When you can and are able - TRAVEL. Seek out these amazing places, the forgotten fringes and the incredible people working so very hard to keep the show on the road under immense pressure. It is, and will be the most fore-filling and incredible trips you will ever do!

One Leopard vs. Two Porcupines. Hard to say who is more unsure of the other, either way, it is an entertaining evening encounter! 🐆

The African Wild Dog, also known as the 'painted dog' due to its distinctive splattered-like coat 🙌
They travel in packs of up to thirty to bring up the young, protect the old, and successfully hunt, and as an endangered species, it is always an extraordinary sighting!

Snug as a bug in a rug, or a leopard cub in the gentle jaws of its devoted mother 🐆
Here in the Okavango Delta, we admire the agility and tactile nature of this female leopard, gracefully transporting her cub to a new den. Safety is at the top of her agenda and she will go to great lengths to ensure they are hidden from danger. Utterly inspiring! 🤎

Spot for Spot in the Kruger National Park 🐆
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is nothing like the connection between mother and cub out in the wild, and as they sit and watch over their home, this unbreakable bond never wavers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The young cubs stay with their mothers for up to two years before venturing out on their own. They learn everything from hunting and hiding to climbing until they are ready to go solo - this is a rare degree of attachment within the animal kingdom, making leopards even more special 🤎

"Time to reawaken...
To see the intensity of a lion's gaze,
To smell a passing herd in the morning breeze,
To feel the soft down of a feather
To taste the sweetness of wild fruit on a hot Summer's day
To hear the crack of a seedpod as it opens to welcome tomorrow's journey
Come let us awaken your senses..."

Gonarezhou National Park is a gem amongst African parks, and offers safari travellers an increasingly rare ability to explore untouched Africa. It's a favourite of ours to visit and a wonderful example of the continuing efforts of conservation bodies doing their best to protect wild places.
Gonarezhou Conservation Trust is a partnership between the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the Frankfurt Zoological Society who are working to secure its long term conservation viability. Tourism is an important factor in making sure these partnerships continue to survive - and thrive - and makes it ever more important for travellers to support safari initiatives and areas such as these.
