There are few places in the world, where one can be exploring bustling night markets and wake up the next day and discover rugged landscapes and remote wilderness.
-
Taiwan is one of those places. Less than 1.5 hours from 7 million people, visitors to Taipei can head off to Laomei River (老梅溪) in Shimen District of New Taipei City.
-
📍 Laomei River (老梅溪) is located near the northern boundary of Yangmingshan National Park (25.2420345,121.5497982)
-
🚌 Public Transportation to the trailhead is not great. From Tamshui MRT, there are two bus transfers and a fair bit of walking.
-
🏊‍♂️ Accessing the river. along a trace is easy, but visitors should always be prepared and familiar with the terrain. Helmet, life-jacket, and a thin wetsuit would be recommended (at least in the late fall-winter-early spring.

Adventurers flock to Badouzi (八斗子) with its rugged, emerald coastline and seemingly endless outdoor adventures available. If you're in Taiwan between May and October, you have to get here.
-
The northeast coast of Taiwan is one of the most spectacular destinations for outdoor recreation and adventure in Taiwan. While the rocky outcrop of Elephant Rock (深澳象鼻岩) is now resting at the bottom of the ocean, there's still a ton to do here.
-
📍Badouzi (八斗子) is located less than an hour away from Taipei at 25.1353° N, 121.8029° E
-
✅ There's a great hike along Wangyougu 望幽谷, great diving and a nice sea-side vibe if you're not up for too much.
-
☀ Between May and October, the water temperatures average 28°C (or around 83℉).
-
🚌 Take the 1579 bus from Yuanshan MRT Station in Taipei. 25 stops later, you'll arrive at the TRA Badouzi Station.

Did you know that Taiwan has the World's First Certified "Quiet Trail"?

We had the opportunity to hike the entire trail with no one there.

Complete. Utter. Silence.

The moss and lichen are incredible along this trail and provide the surrounding area with an organic sound-absorbing environment that helped this stunning trail get some of its accolades.

📣: Cueifeng Lake Circular Trail

📍 Location: Taipingshan National Forest in Yilan County

📏 Distance: 3.95km (bit more with a road section)

⬆️ Altitude: Between 1,900m and 2,000m

📈 Elevation Gain: 106m

💪 Difficulty Level: 2/5 (there is a bit of uneven terrain, but overall this is a fun trail to hike for most skill levels)

🥢 Services: There is a flushing washroom at the eastern trailhead and a small service station with water re-fills near the trailhead of Taiwan Beech Tree Trail. Pack what you need for the day.

🌞 Shade: With the exception of a few lookouts and clearings, most of the trail is shaded.

🚌 Transportation: The only way to access the Cueifeng Lake area of Taipingshan is through private car or with a tour company. While you can get to Taipingshan using public transportation, it is an additional 40 minute drive up to Cueifeng Lake.

📱 Cell Reception: Limited reception along most of the trail, with some clearings providing connection.
