1800s Pt Reyes: Mayhem, Murder and a Mystery

Josiah Swain was a ship captain who was hired as the ranch foreman by Andrew Randall about 1853. Swain stayed near Randall’s house on Bull Point in Pt. Reyes which was later referred to as Swain’s Flat. It was said that his home was built from the wreckage of ships. There was no shortage of work to be done at Randall’s ranch which included wild horses and cattle, hogs, tame cattle and oxen.

Andrew Randall came to California in 1847 as a gunner on the U.S.S. Portsmouth. Randall was known as a scientist and doctor. He founded, and was elected chairman of the California Academy of Sciences. By 1853, Randall had purchased a number of ranchos dividing his time between Point Reyes and San Francisco with an office on Clay Street.

Unfortunately, Randall invested well beyond his means and was deeply in debt during the financial depression of the 1850s. Unable to pay in a timely manner, Randall was pursued by Joseph Hetherington, a creditor who constantly threatened Randall. Hetherington was a known gambler and was described as a “slippery scoundrel”. On July 24, 1856, Hetherington fatally shot Randall in the lobby of the St. Nicholis Hotel in San Francisco leaving Randall’s wife with four children. Hetherington was hanged on July 29, 1856. After the property litigation, some of Randall’s land had to be sold to pay off debts.

Josiah Swain occupied the house for many years after Randall's murder in San Francisco. In 1857, Swain leased 2,000 acres from John Reynolds for $1.00 per year. After a year, he was evicted by the new owners, Shafter, Shafter, Park and Heydenfeld since they were awarded the title to the land. Luckily, the Shafters wrote a new five-year lease to Swain in July of 1858, and Swain operated a butter dairy until at least until the early 1860s. It was between 1860-1870 that a “radical population change happened in Point Reyes Township”.

In the late 1860s, Josiah Swain mysteriously disappeared from the area. By 1870, Swain’s Flat became the site of F Ranch.
