May sojourn to Priest Lake! Wouldn’t be complete without a brewery and cemetery stop, becuz that’s the History & H***h way. 😛

St. Thomas Cemetery in CdA, around 130 yo, had a gorgeous blend of old and new gravestones and has been nicely updated.

Finally made it to Selkirk Abbey in Post Falls, Idaho’s finest Belgian-themed brewery. Had the amazing St. Thomas Black Saison and took a few for the road. And by a few I mean a large, rattly box 😎

Spotlight: Johnny Crowe’s Sample Rooms, 1870-1874. Sample Room = Saloon but with drinks sold by the glass instead of bottle. Here’s what the Statesman had to say about it in 1871:

“CONUNDRUM: Why does Johnny Crowe call his place a Sample Room? Because you can go there and sample all the varieties of liquids and ci**rs you will find, and you will discover nothing but the best. We studied out this answer by observing men of enlightened taste who go there to drink, or order home a supply that is fit to bring up a family on.”

Ahhh, days of yore, when a family was brought up on liquor and newspapermen regularly plugged their favorite saloon. 😉

Spotlight: ye olde Masonic Temple on Boise’s Main St, built in 1894. Yup, we’re talking Freemasons, the oldest fraternal organization / secret society in the world.

Before you blow the dust from your copy of the Da Vinci Code, let me just say that Freemasonry originates with the stonemason guilds of medieval Europe. Think Notre Dame. Does our little brick building on Main represent? You tell me.

For a secret society, the Masons sure made the papers a lot, but as far as I can tell they did nothing more exciting here than hold meetings and the occasional funeral. I found such scintillating headlines as, “Freemasons in Session,” and “Masons Royally Entertained.” Riiiiiiight.

BUT, this week is Cinco de Mayo so I popped into the old temple to have lunch at Coa de Jima. They claim to offer a fresh perspective on Mexican dining – I just know my blackened halibut tacos were delicious, the ambiance was fantastic, and my only regret is that I couldn’t stay for draanks. Looks like I’ll be headed back there soon. 😉

This hike was a tick off the ole bucket list! The B-23 Dragon Bomber crash site at Loon Lake.

It went down in the winter of 1943 and was declared unrecoverable, which makes perfect sense once you’ve hiked your ass out there. 😅

An amazing journey with an incredible destination. Highly recommend.

What are these mysterious things I found in the Boise Foothills, at Military Reserve? Anyone heard of a Universal Dressing Room??

There are 3, in the middle of nowhere, with signs in English, Spanish, and Braille. Last pic shows how they blend in from a distance.

Help! I’m so intrigued 🤔😁

New cider release!!! And profits go to the Idaho Black History Museum 🤗

Big news we are SO excited about!

We have collaborated with the Idaho Black History Museum (IBHM) to bring you a brand new cider: Jupiter’s Cider

The cider’s name is based on Jupiter Evans, an enslaved man belonging to Thomas Jefferson. Evans was an integral part of Jefferson’s household and was in charge of the very precise and important work of overseeing the apple-crushing, pressing, and cider-making at Monticello. With this cider we hope to pay tribute to a fellow cider-maker whose history should never be forgotten.

Jupiter’s Cider is a single-varietal made from Newtown Pippin apples, the same apples Evan’s would have used at Monticello during his lifetime. It is a semi-dry “Pét-Nat” style cider, meaning it has undergone secondary fermentation in-bottle to produce small delicate champagne-like bubbles.

All profits from Jupiter’s Cider will go directly to the IBHM to fund their work in supporting the unique cultural fabric of Idaho by telling the often overlooked history of Black Idahoans.

Join us for a Zoom Event where we will do a guided tasting of Jupiter’s Cider with one of Meriwether’s Certified Cider Professionals followed by IBHM’s executive director Phillip Thompson speaking about the contributions Black Americans have made to this country. For more details and to register for this event go to meriwethercider.com/jupiterscider

Bottles are available for pre-order for pick up at either location at https://meriwether-cider.square.site/ or if you live farther afield you can order them to be shipped to you at meriwethercider.com/buycider

Took a time out from Boise to visit Blue Pit Brewing, Mountain Home’s first brewery. Blue Pit opened last October, is pet friendly (obviously), and serves up some dang good brews. I highly recommend the Mastiff, Belgian Tripel. 😋 With lots of open space, masks, and spread out tables, it felt safe and comfortable. Worth a visit if you’re looking for a quick getaway...with beer. 😛
