In the early 1600s, the Dutch entered Indonesia and recruited many Chinese-Indonesian immigrants as laborers for construction of Jakarta. Soon it grew into a significant trading hub for China and India. Jakarta became home to the largest Chinese community in Indonesia, and still is today, growing to around 10,000 by 1740. A multitude of Chinese immigrants cut ties with the mainland in favor of settlement and protection under the Dutch. This proved to be a bad choice as anti-Chinese policies were implemented under Dutch colonial rule including murders and ghettoization.
~
1998 saw the fall of discriminatory policy against Chinese Indonesian people after General Suharto, former president of Indonesia and anti-Chinese Indonesian, suddenly resigned. The reform that came soon after was geared towards building the confidence of Chinese Indonesians that did not (or could not) flee. In 2000, the public practice of Chinese culture was acceptable and in 2002, Chinese New Year was acknowledged as a national holiday.

Who's ever been inside of a lighthouse?
~
There are about 20 lighthouses in Holland. This beauty pictured is in Winterswijk. Winterswijk was a secluded farming colony until 1830 when there was a road built to connect Borken to Zutphen through Winterswijk. In 1878, a railroad was built in the town mainly for the import and export of textiles after the boom of the textile industry in the Netherlands. A look ahead to 1945, sees liberation day for Winterswijk during World War II. March 31st is observed as the official liberation day for Winterswijk. The Jewish people of Winterswijk were almost completely wiped out, but a synagogue stills stands in the town, providing guided tours for visitors.

What's your favorite 'feel better' meal?
~
The Netherlands is known for stamppot and stroopwaffel, but little is heard about the delicious food that comes from the Moluccan community in Holland. Likened to chicken soup, Bubur Ayam is an Moluccan/Indonesian chicken porridge made with rice, chicken, and other condiments. Similar to Chinese chicken congee, Bubur Ayam is known as comfort food in Indonesia and the Maluku Islands. Below is an authentic recipe for Bubur Ayam with Shredded Omelette that'll make you book a flight ASAP!
~
1 egg
1 chicken breast
1 cup of rice
½ cup of beans
1 clove of garlic (slightly crushed)
1 handful parsley (chopped)
Dry fried onions
Several small green bird’s-eye chilis (chopped finely)
½ cup of kecap manis (sweet soy sauce)
~
1. Put the rice and 2 cups of water in a saucepan over high heat.
2. When it starts to boil add the garlic and the chicken.
3. Cook for 15-20 minutes; the chicken should be cooked through.
4. Make the omelette by breaking the egg, and mixing and cooking it thinly in vegetable oil.
5. Cut the omelette into strips. Shred the chicken, making sure it’s cooked right through. Some Balinese cooks will then fry the chicken as well.
6. Pour some sweet soy sauce into a small bowl and add the chopped chilis.
Distribute the ‘porridge’ into two deep bowls.
7. Add the shredded chicken, omelette, fried onion, beans, and some chopped parsley.
8. Add a little of the soy sauce to the bowl. Leave the bowl on the table for those who want some of the chilis to give the dish some real kick.

Travel is sociocultural learning for young people.
~
Youth tourism is steadily increasing as youth become more independent and more curious to delve into the world outside of their immediate neighborhoods. Youth travel is international travel, but can also include trips within their country. Inviting children to explore outside of their limited world gives them freedom which they will appreciate as they grow older. There are many things to be learned from traveling that young people can utilize to their benefit. Imagine as a high school student, you've already traversed six out of the seven continents. Not many students have that privilege, and opportunities like that for a child are few and far between. EN-NOBLE supports youth travel and encourages young people to venture out and discover new things. Get a head start on global exploration because you never know what cultures you'll fall in love with.

Traveling is always fun! However, is it fun for everyone involved? Probably not. The tourism industry is responsible for more than 2 trillion dollars of the global economy. Yet, some of the most popular destinations are countries that house some of the poorest citizens of the world. How is that possible? Large corporations take your money and instead of funding the communities that enrich your experience, they funnel it back into their companies, leaving the nation's citizens destitute.
~
We talk about wealth redistribution a lot here at EN-NOBLE, but with good reason! Currently, the distribution of funds from tourism is extremely disproportionate. EN-NOBLE encourages you to give back and give MORE to those who are in service to you and have granted you a worthwhile experience.

Who's ever been camping before? Glamping?
~
Glamping is a concept that combines the experience of camping with glamour and comfort that's usually aren't associated with camping. Traditional camping is very sustainable, all you have to rely on are the elements and the equipment you brought with you. Little electricity is involved in camping and water sources are usually natural. However, glamping can easily become wasteful. The glamour part of glamping usually involves electricity and running water amongst other factors that are less than eco-friendly.
~
Thankfully, sustainable glamping was created. Enjoy the charm of glamping while keeping your eco-footprint as small as possible. Here are a few glamping accommodations that will keep your stay green!
- Solar-Powered Yurt on Horse Farm in Hudson Valley, New York
- Safari Tent Constructed from Recycled Materials near San Diego, California
- Complete Off-The-Grid Treehouse in Machynlleth, Sweden
- Organically Catered Eco-Dome in Tanzania, Africa

The waters of São Tomé e Príncipe are filled with many different kinds of wildlife, most of them being fish. This makes it one of the best destinations for travel fishing. Many fishermen from other countries pick up their equipment and head for the Santomean waters because of the abundance of fish. The best fishing season is from July to November. You'll be able to see giant sailfish, wahoo, dolphin fish, barracuda, bluefin tuna, and, the holy grail, blue marlin. Blue marlin can grow to be 1000 pounds and 14 feet long. If you're chasing the infamous blue marlin, fishing at Ilhéu Bom Bom is your best bet.

São Tomé was settled in the 1490s by Portuguese conquistador Alvaro Caminha and the Portuguese Crown took over in 1522. Soon the country became a distinguished merchant of cash crops produced by thousands of enslaved people. Some slaves resisted their assumed fate and fled to ultimately create a maroon colony in the mountains. By the 1550s, São Tomé was the leading exporter of sugar grown by African slave labor, setting the standard for slavery in the West Indies. However, soon the sugar industry diminished and new crops came to the forefront. The island's volcanic soil was perfect for farming coffee and chocolate and the crops thrived in the 20th century.

What do you get when you cross a Turtle with a Giraffe? (Answer in the comments)
~
Turtle watching is a beloved activity that many tourists enjoy on their trip to São Tomé e Príncipe. The sister islands are home to four different species of sea turtles: Leatherback, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill and Green. They are mostly seen laying their eggs from November to February, and after about a month, the baby turtles take their first steps towards the ocean. Iléhu Bom Bom is a perfect spot to spend an evening watching sea turtles and bask in their calming presence.

What's a more fun name than Bom Bom?
~
Almost completely arboraceous, Ilhéu Bom Bom is situated near the north coast of Príncipe and has some of the most scenic spots in the country. This tiny islet covered by forest contains a hidden resort right in the thick of it. The resort offers many activities to provide tourists with an enjoyable island experience during their stay. Start the morning off with a guided walking tour through the forest, then go on a canoe adventure with local fishermen, and maybe finish the day with a candlelit dinner for two on the pier. When you go, make sure to send a postcard!
