Living Heritage Koslanda was one of the most tranquil and beautiful hotels we have been to. Located within an 80 acre property in the stunning hills of Koslanda, the hotel is designed with the very essence of Sri Lankan archiecture in mind.

We booked one of their ‘forest pavilions’ and was amazed at how well it blended with its surrounding. Each pavilion is built on a steep hillside and you get an absolutely stunning view of misty hills and treetops. My personal favorite time here was definitely sunrise.

The pavilions are minimally furnished without compromising on comfort. Of course you need to put up with an insect or two at night as these wall-less pavilions are protected from the elements by a series of layered linen curtains. It’s paradise for a nature lover if you know what I mean. You can spend the entire day just lounging around listening to the constant buzz of huge blue carpenter bees and watching oversized yellow butterflies flit about the room.

Just a 20 minute trek through the hotels own jungle lies their best kept secret: your very own private waterfall. Yes, a secret waterfall! It was like a fantastic dream where there’s no one around you for miles around. Just you, the forest and the sound of water.

The staff was absolutely wonderful and the food was just yumm. I feel this property is the complete package for any traveler; Good food, nature and adventure all in a beautiful, serene setting.

What's the best way to spend a Poya holiday in Sri Lanka? 🤔 Do a garden tour at Boutique 87 of course!

Boutique 87 is a quintessential Ceylonese hotel designed by Sri Lanka's most famous architect Geoffrey Bawa. Its an 18 acre property with 2 villas, an extensive garden complete with private lake and island.

It's definitely the most tranquil hotel that we have been to so far. The hotel carries all the unmistakable traces of Bawa architecture and took us into a complete dream world. So naturally we spent the entire day there dreaming away and just walking through it's garden dotted with random follies and ferns, snapping pics and basically just hanging around. A day well spent and left us feeling absolutely content. ☮️

Who has been to Waga?

Waga is a beautiful little town located in Colombo district. It’s about 35km from Colombo city and a great place for a day outing. Waga can be reached by turning off at Kaluaggala junction in Hanwella along the Avissawella road. It can also be reached by train and this too is a great way to get there. (We have done this a few years back and just loved the scenic route)

Things to do at Waga -
1. Take a dip in the picturesque Wak Oya (0.5km from Waga station) There is a stunning railway bridge here which you must see.
2. Visit Seethawaka Wet zone botanical garden. Arguably one of the prettiest botanical gardens in the country, I highly recommend this. (10km from Waga station)
3. Visit Labugama reservoir. (We haven’t been here yet.)
4. Visit Labugama and Udagama forest reserves. This too we are yet to see.

It’s a relatively unspoiled place and I really really hope anyone who goes there will do their best to keep it that way. As I always say, travel all the time but travel responsibly.

So who has already been there?

I always believed in magic. Even now I believe in the Cheshire cats, Magic carpets, Oompa-Loompas, Poisned apples and Love potions from the stories of my childhood. In fact I was one of those kids literally waiting for my letter from Hogwarts and when it didn’t come, I sulked for days. I wholeheartedly believed I deserved it!

Now after beeing in the ‘real world’ I have finally realized something. Magic does exist, but not in the form I imagined it to be. Magic exists in moments we find something we truly love and it makes you inately happy. It exists in people that we love, and people who love us back for no reason whatsoever. Magic are the moments we live each day with all we ever asked for, with whom we wish to be.

So who’s to say magic isn’t real? It’s very real indeed.

Hey guys! Just wanna share another amazing place we visited while at Tissamaharama. This is a monastery complex called Sandagiri Saya and is located very close to the famous Tissamaharama Stupa.

This is believed to be one of the oldest stupas in the country. Bricks have been found dating back to the 2nd century BC and the monastery has been built by King Kavantissa during his reign.

If you ever visit Tissa I think this is a spot worth visiting. We were there at mid-day and the heat was a little extreme. Walking barefoot was almost torture! So we recommend a visit during morning hours or evening because it’s a serene place and is worth spending some time there.

@ Tissamaharama

This place is called Gal kanu mandiya and is located in Tissamaharama. It’s believed to be the remains of king Kavantissa’s palace and is around 2500 years old!

We went there around 10am and had the place all to ourselves. So it seems the best time to see this place would be the morning hours and late afternoon.

Do stay tuned for more ‘nutty stories’ from Tissamaharama!!

Let’s travel responsibly.

We were in again last weekend and was extremely disappointed to see how it has changed within the last six months. There were mounds of trash all over the place and people walk right past as if it’s normal. It made us really sad to see this beautiful little gem slowly loosing its beauty due to our negligence.

Also we were overwhelmed by the amount of visitors per day. It was a Saturday eve and there were 200 plus people there mostly drunk and taking beer bottles right into the water. It was a loud and nasty place to be right then. 😢

Sri Lanka needs to amend its tourism policies and we as travelers need to take an initiative. Also people need to practice self discipline more than ever right now. At least in the face of nature. Change has to come from somewhere. Let’s get that ball rolling shall we?

Please take a second to jot down your ideas for sustainable tourism in the comments section below. Let’s see if we can get together to initiate

Happy Monday guys!!

This is the treasure we found this time in Ella! Isn’t it just precious? Each time we visit this place there’s always something new to discover.

This spot is below the bridge and getting there is a mini adventure in itself. You need to tread your way through thick tea bushes on a steep downhill path. Still I thought it’s worth the effort.

You get to see the bridge from underneath and it seems enormous from this angle. Frankly it was like the underbelly of a mysterious monster! The feeling you get wandering barefoot in a space like this is beyond words.

Isn’t it amazing to find new things about a place you have visited before?

Sometimes it’s not the destination that leaves lasting memories, but the journey itself.

For example, this little shack we discovered on our way to Deniyaya! Super cute isn’t it? And guess what? It’s got a letter ‘N’ on it!!
Like ‘N’, for Nutty Travel Stories 😎 🙌😇

We want to know who else can see it. High five below if you do!!

So we thought of doing a brief introduction to Deniyaya for those who haven’t been there.

Deniyaya is a little town located in Southern Sri Lanka and the area is surrounded by the Sinharaja forest reserve. The climate is mostly cool compared to the rest of the Southern Province. Below is a to do list if you ever visit this wonderful little town.

* Visit Gatabaruwa temple
* Explore Sinharaja forest reserve
* Check out the natural slide rock at Patna
* Take a hike to the summit of Gongala mountain
* Explore the dozens of waterfalls in the vicinity. (Sathmale ella, Kotapola ella, Athamala ella, Biso ella to name a few)

These are just the main attractions. If you explore further, the area reveals so much more. Await our review on some of the above mentioned places soon! Also don’t forget to leave only footsteps and take only memories 🤗

Hey guys! Hope you had a lovely Monday! 😀

We were wandering around Deniyaya this weekend and the weather was incredible. It was cloudy with occasional showers and slightly chilly. Just the way I like this cozy little town to be. 🤗

So how was your weekend? Did you travel or did you stay home and enjoy the rainy weather?

Colombo Stories - Cargills & Millers building

Walking down the streets of Fort, there’s a building that’s impossible to miss with its signature red brick Edwardian style architecture. Located on the corner of York street and Prince street, there’s almost nobody in Sri Lanka who hasn’t heard of the Cargills & Millers building.

The building was originally built in 1844 and was supposedly Sri Lanka’s first ever department store! They sold everything from ladies dresses, groceries, horse feed to watches, silverware and bicycles. Good old times I guess.

What’s interesting is that the outer corridor of the building is used by pedestrians as a walkway so the building merges flawlessly into York Street.

The joy of being in that age old corridor is beyond words. I think it’s a place definitely worth visiting if you haven’t been there already.

Colombo stories - Pettah

Have you ever walked down the streets of Pettah? If you haven’t already, I think you should give it a try. Pettah is hands down the most crowded area in Colombo but it has a certain old school charm to it.

The neighborhood is famous for its markets, open air bazaars and retail shops. Pettah actually looks like a gigantic crossword puzzle from above and it definitely takes more than an entire day to cover the whole area. It’s the most beautifully multi cultural and colorful neighborhood I have seen in Sri Lanka.

This picture was snapped on Keizer street. We found it unusually empty probably due to the Covid situ. The Dutch museum and the famous Red mosque are just one block away from this spot and we will definitely do mini reviews on those too!

Colombo Stories - Part 1

This is Colombo Fort clock tower, previously known as the Colombo lighthouse. It’s located at the end of Chatham street and you can see it if you’re walking down York Street.

Apparently it was originally built as a lighthouse in 1857 and later converted into a clock tower in 1952. Standing at a height of 95 feet this tower was the tallest building in Fort during that time.
