Hurricane Harvey … Five Years Ago

… we’ve mostly recovered from that uninvited villain ...

If you lived here then … you remember the overwhelming carnage left in its wake. Homes & businesses were heavily damaged … or outright destroyed. Every street was clogged with endless debris.

… I’ll never forget that Thursday afternoon … one day before it hit us. I was down at the beach enjoying a perfect day. Brilliant sunshine, not a cloud in sight. I was about to get on my ebike & take a ride … when my phone rang.

It was Dr. Steve. He said the storm pattern had just turned & it's gonna hammer us hard. I need to get my stuff ready to roll right now! I laughed & told him to chill … it’s gonna be fine.

He told me I was dead wrong about that.

I thanked him for his concern & hung up. Then I paused. There was an eerie stillness in the air. Kinda felt like the calm before all hell hits the fan? So, I loaded up my gear, drove back home & got my roll-estate ready to transport north in the morning.

At the time, I owned & operated Texas RV Transport … and my phone rang non-stop as I prepared. I promised two desperate customers that I had time to pull them as far as Aransas Pass on Friday morning. Then I had to come back & save me. Pulled both units, then headed back for my RV. While on the ferry, I saw a familiar number ringing on my phone.

It was Carter & Christina Bruce, who had a 5th wheel @ Gulf Waters RV Resort. I answered & reluctantly agreed to tow it up to Goliad. As soon as I arrived at destination, we quickly got it off my truck & they graciously offered me safe-haven 275 miles north … in the friendly confines of Hudson Bend, at a home he was remodeling.

It was an unexpected GOD sent opportunity.

So I hustled back to Port A, hooked up my 5th wheel & headed north in the endlessly slow moving train of traffic. Once I finally arrived in Hudson Bend & set-up … I watched the devastating news on my iPad & couldn’t believe what I saw!

Four days later, I came back down to help another customer move his RV from Port A to Port Mansfield. The ferry was shut down, so after BS’n the cops at the Hwy 361 checkpoint … that I was a first responder … I drove slowly toward Port A.

I couldn’t believe what I saw! If you were here … you’ll never forget those images either. Downed power poles & wires all the way back to Port A. Bay grasses frozen in time along every fence line & pole. It was a surreal scene to say the least.

Port A was gutted. Businesses, homes & RV parks were destroyed. Boats sat in the middle of intersections. Personal belongings, structural damage & storm debris was tossed everywhere.

Those were very strange days/weeks/months indeed. But because we’re Port A Strong, we emerged from the muck & mire & quickly started rebuilding our tiny town. It’s taken a lot of time & effort.
We’re still making progress!



Below are pics of a car abandoned in the aftermath. It was dumped on Tony Amos Boulevard.

My only question is … what the heck happened to that (once shiny) high-zoot import ride … and how the hell did it end up there?

We headed south yesterday to enjoy the beaches of CC. After we arrived, this fella in a police uniform & truck pulled up next to us.

OMG (I thought) ... I didn't do it ... I was framed!

I watched him intently ... as he pulled a shovel out of the back of his truck & started filling a huge hole someone left.

He was humpin' away like a one-man band ... in that steamy-hot, SoTex sun.

So I walked over & asked him if that was part of his regular duties? He said no ... he just doesn't want someone to get hurt!

His name is Michael & he's the beach code enforcement officer @ the CCPD. He serves the same role as Alex & Aaron here @ the PAPD.

What a cool dude - Mahalo Michael! Well done CCPD - much respect...🤙
