Effective today, US 441/Newfound Gap Road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is open 24 hours a day. The park is lifting the overnight road closure with the help of Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Government and Sevier County (The Cities of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville and the Sevier County Government) partners, who will assist the park in turning around commercial vehicles at checkpoints on both sides of US 441/Newfound Gap Road overnight.

The park continues to see an influx of illegal, large commercial vehicles attempting to travel the road—the park has turned away 173 commercial vehicles over five days. While the National Park Service recognizes that major routes outside the park are currently closed, Newfound Gap Road is not safe for large, commercial vehicles. Newfound Gap Road is a two-lane road with steep, continuous grades and tight curves. There are no truck lanes, runaway truck ramps or places for a large commercial vehicle to slow down and pull over.

Commercial vehicles are always prohibited on US 441/Newfound Gap Road and in all of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (with the exception of the Spur). Commercial vehicles will be stopped, turned around at checkpoints and may be subject to a federal misdemeanor violation notice and fine.

Most of Great Smoky Mountains National Park is open. Visitors are always encouraged to check current conditions in the park before visiting: www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

Friends.

Maggie Valley continues to move forward with progress, and as such, I want to remind you that many of our local Maggie Valley businesses are open and ready to serve you.

If your Fall travel plans include Maggie Valley area, please keep the following five R’s in mind as we continue to write our recovery story:

- Research: While we wish every business, road and attraction in and around Maggie Valley was open for you to experience and enjoy, currently that is just not the case. A planned and researched trip will make your time in Maggie Valley area more enjoyable. Please don’t believe everything you see on social media. Instead, credible information should be sought from trusted sources to make the most of your time in Maggie Valley. One such research is our Maggie Valley Chamber of Commerce that is ready to guide you and help ensure your time in Maggie Valley is enjoyable and memorable. A running and continually updated list of open businesses can be confirmed with the Chamber. You can reach the Maggie Valley Chamber of Commerce at 828-926-1686. Or you can stop in and see them at 2781 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC between the hours of 9am to 4pm.

- Room and board: some of our local hotels and short term rentals were damaged and are not able to accommodate guests at this time. Others may be hosting first responders and other aid serving both our immediate area, or other areas of WNC within a commutable distance. If you have reservations- you are strongly advised to confirm those reservations. If you do not have a reservation, please ensure you have one.

- Roads: Highways and local roads have been impacted by Hurricane Helene. Many remain closed, including 43 miles along Interstate 40 near the TN state line in both directions as well as Interstate 26 near the TN state line. While Soco Road is open in Maggie Valley, some secondary roads and infrastructure remains a work in progress. Please confirm your route as you travel in and around Maggie Valley. If staying in a property off Soco, confirm access to the property.

- Restrictions: Some popular areas remain closed and closures should be respected, for your safety. Areas closed include the Blue Ridge Parkway (entirety of parkway in NC), Cataloochee Valley and Chestnut Mountain. If an area is closed, please realize it is for your safety. Do not enter those areas that are closed.

- Respect: Areas in and around Maggie Valley will look different as recovery continues. Please be respectful and avoid those areas still working on their recovery. Tragedy should NEVER be a tourist attraction. Please be compassionate and understanding of what our local friends and families are experiencing without making their pain your social media fame.

Keep in mind: Fall is a popular time for our Maggie Valley area businesses. These small businesses need your support as our area continues to rebuild and recover. There is still much to enjoy in and around the Maggie Valley area and Fall is an amazing time to enjoy all this area has to offer.

Be sure to stop by and get some goodies and such from my friends at Maggie Mountaineer Crafts. They are one of my favorite gift shops in Maggie Valley and have something for everyone - and much much more.

And with Fall upon us, they are your source for fresh apples, as well. Be sure to get over and check them out!

The Beginning...

Christina and I wanted to create a getaway cabin that would be extraordinary. It had to have a rustic mountain feel. It needed to be cozy. So in May 2019, we began the great journey of designing and constructing this unique vacation retreat. Our amazing neighbor, Andy, and his awesome construction crew built the structure and completed the large jobs on the inside of the cabin. Christina and I finished up the remaining jobs on the inside - painting, staining, installing the flooring and the pallet wall in the kitchen area, building the kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanity, counter tops, the bathroom barn door, utility room barn door and applying the final decorative touches. For us, the details matter. From the hemlock log that is supporting the bedroom loft to the old iron padlock on the utility room door, the details take your stay experience from the ordinary to the extraordinary! It was a long and sometimes difficult journey, but now it is so rewarding seeing the fruits of all of our labor. Bella's Mountain Hideaway is truly a one-of-a-kind cabin!
