Cycling up to a volcano ! 🚴‍♂️🌋
The trip couldn´t have started in a better way, I´ve stayed hours up there watching at the volcano and feeling the immense heat of the lava 😍🔥

‘Richness comes with struggle’ – I repeated those words in my head like an incantation, surprised that I had managed to form a thought between my ragged breaths. I was cycling at 5,000m and my body was desperate for oxygen; I began to muse over the symptoms of altitude sickness. ‘Richness comes with struggle.’

Volcanoes and Vicuñas – A Bolivian cycling adventure.

This night, we slept under the -5 Celsius degrees but didn’t feel the cold at all. It would however be a liar to say it wasn’t hard to get back to the road with this extreme dry cold.
We nervertheless didn’t have any other option but to brave upfront the wind which took a form of continuous gusts - the 50 km / h West wind was giving itself a full blast.

Our journey towards the majestic mountain ranges horizon seem even more unattainable as the wind was head-on. But we strived to welcome this suffering as a way to cherish even more the silent beauty of this elusive sight.

Day 364 🇫🇮 Koskenpaa 12,644 km
In Finland we often wake up after a few hours sleep and feel like we have slept all night. 🙄 Also tonight at 11:20 pm. It isn't even dark yet outside. 🤭After killing a few mosquitoes, we grab our mosquito pop-up domes to have some more peaceful hours of sleep. 😴 They are too many mosquitoes. There is no point of killing them.

The first 25 km are tough. An interval training on a dirt road. And it drizzles. 😤 In Jamsa we take a long break. Then we continue on a tarmac road with some more small hills. The sun starts shining again. 🌤

After about 70 km we see a campsite on our route where we settle down for the night. While we are using the Wi-Fi in the main building, Angelo just enters. He is also on his bike for a week to Northern Finland. If he would not have any obligations, he would also be on an adventure like ours. ☺️ He is a vet, born in Rio (Brazil) and often goes on long bike trips like this. 💪🏻

He treats us to a beer and we treat him to spaghetti with tuna and pesto. 🍻😋 A different bite than the instant meals he's on. 🙃 It is very cozy despite the millions of small flies that sit on us and on our food. Sometimes there is also a mosquito among them. Angelo says Finland is the land of millions of lakes and trillions of mosquitoes. 🤣

He also tells us that the Finns are often shy and respect each other's privacy. To really become friends with a Finn you have to be active in keeping the relationship alive.

Otro crack

There's always one crazier than you.

When we reached Pamir 4, in the small village of Karakul, we met two bicycle travellers, one took the option of the M41. Other was on our heels crossing the Bartang. The guy on the photo

He came all the way from France on a bamboo bike! A beautiful machine that had endured a thousand hardships but fell in battle in the Bartang valley by opening a crack in one of the main tubes making the bike too flexible under the weight of the saddlebags.

Nothing to stop Gael "bamboo guy", who said that now instead of riding he was dancing with his winding bike.

All that's happened over the last few years of exploring the world by bicycle is starting to feel like a dream.

Not all heroes wear capes! 🔥🔥💪🏼
In Southern Angola, I met Enrique from the Netherlands. He turned 70 a few weeks back, and like many of us, celebrated his birthday on the road far away from his loved ones!
He has been cycling from home down the West Coast to South Africa. Prior to that, he cycled to Iran as well! Not only has he got that strong will to pursue his bicycle dreams at 70, but he's also got that strength to cycle 100km+ per day on average and make it sound like a walk in the park! We cycled for a few km together in search for a church that was bombed during the "border war" with South Africa. However, we never found it. The church was destroyed, you know... 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️
Anyway, Enrique is the living proof that age is just a number! If you're healthy, the desire you put in will in itself determine how far you go! So, bring your asses on the road! Well, after the lockdown I suppose... Pals, now is a wise time to plan!!! Good luck to all other cyclists now stuck abroad. We will !

I was going to wait until it was the right time then I remembered now is always the right time. Feast your eyes on the rain I brought to this drought struck region 😂 ok I didn’t actually bring it but as I rode up the hill into the first city I have seen in 125 days and with a storm charging along with me it sure felt like it was nature’s way of saying don’t worry I’m with you, we are one!

10/05/2021

We were reunited with our touring bicycles in Samarkand, after spending 4 months of Winter in Nepal and India. March is a perfect time to be visiting Central Asia, cool days with blue skies, just warm enough to camp in the desert and very few tourist so the locals are even more welcoming.

After landing in Tashkent (and passing the arrival health tests), we managed to get on an old sleeper train the same day to Samarkand. We were excited to get cycling and camping again; for the first time it really felt like we were cycling home, cycling West and towards Europe.
Although cycling in India was hectic we actually felt pretty safe amongst all the other cyclists and slow traffic. The roads are wide in Samarkand but the drivers are erratic and they are not used to looking out for anything other than cars (and they aren't great at that either). Within 3km I had a car door open into me, taking me and my front panniers off my bicycle. The car had been parked as I approached and there was no indication that someone would be in the car and open the door right out into the road. I was a little shaken and my go pro mount snapped but I wasn't hurt. Obviously looking /checking in the road is not a routine thing to do in this country and we are the visitors learning how they do things; so I wasn't too annoyed about it but I was taken aback when the guy was unapologetic and not at all worried to see if I was injured, in fact the only thing he was checking was if his car door had been scratched! (this was pre- CV19 restrictions, no cases of the virus in India or Uzbekistan).

Here a little throwback to my last day in hometown Amsterdam. I miss my friends and neighbours, my house with its little balcony garden, and the river Amstel. But I am mainly really grateful to be doing what I am doing and enjoying it to the max! 🤓🍀🌞

Back in Chile!

I have to admit that I didn’t update you guys since quite a few weeks.
So I guess most of you think, that we are still in Costa Rica, but actually we flew to Chile around 5 weeks ago.

Luckily we changed our already booked flights in Costa Rica, to fly 3 weeks earlier, because we weren’t sure how long Chile’s borders would stay open, given the rising Covid numbers. And boom, exactly three weeks after we arrived in Santiago, Chile closed its borders.

So far we have been busy with visiting ‘s family and doing lots of paperwork in Santiago, to organize our next big step.

The whole capital is under quarantine since we’ve been here, so it made everything three times more complicated, but so far we always found a solution.

Quarantine means, we can do sportive activities every morning from 6 to 9.
Otherwise we need to get an online permission to go out, for doing groceries or whatever. Every person has two permissions per week, which each lasts 2 hours. Supermarkets won’t let you enter without permissions and the fines for ignoring quarantine or not using masks are high.

Actually this is our first, real quarantine, as in Brazil and Costa Rica, the situation has been more relaxed.

Right now we are living in the center of Santiago, in an (unused) apartment of a good friend of Isaura, who is lending it to us, as a wedding present.

Luckily we are used to be together for 24/7 since the beginning and as always, we are trying to stay positive and make the most out of the situation.
So yesterday we bought some crayons, pencils and sketchbooks, to fill our days with some more creativity.

Btw, the photos are from January 2019, when I entered Chile for the second time, cycling the ‘Paso de los Libertadores’ (3200m), from Mendoza to Santiago.
