Travelling is about taking a break from ourselves, it is like standing back from our beliefs and watching them die. And yet finding a small piece of us in each place. That's the most fun party ever: you and the whole of mankind! This exhibition took me to Morocco, India, Turkey; in a single evening I met rabbis, wool sellers and fire-eaters. But the most overwhelming experience was to get lost in the whirling skirts of the dervishes and their mystical dance. A dance that celebrates the ego's funeral and reconnects us with the divine.

🇬🇧 It is something about our DNA. That weird attitude we have towards things we should preserve. We are self-destructive, you'd agree. We bomb our home, we take freedom from granted, we are somehow frightened to meet realities other from ours. We should make it easy and enjoy that kind of enrichment. Art can help to this end. Especially if it steps outside the palaces, if it comes to meet us in the streets, in those small towns where the countryside provides the setting. Places where nature, the ancient and the contemporary come into perfect harmony. Colle Val d’Elsa hosts an example of this poetic vision. The one of the big-name artist Cai Guo-Quiang. You know him. He is the one with fireworks and explosions, but here he decided to build! An open-air museum. Because blowing up a museum or building one-he says-is the same thing. Art to connect people. Art as a bridge. That is the metaphor in his mind. Here in Colle he found the matching bridge to translate his thought into reality. And he set up the museum under its arches to host contemporary art exhibitions. UMoCA its name. Under Museum of Contemporary Art. And if by any chance your aim is to go deeper and take an even introspective journey, remember: this is the 14th-century bridge that runs between the Borgo and the Convent of San Francesco. It is here below that you can at least imagine that ideal place where earthly and spiritual life meet. A place to be, at least, once in a lifetime.

🇮🇹 È qualcosa che riguarda il nostro DNA. Quello strano atteggiamento che abbiamo nei confronti delle cose che dovremmo preservare. Siamo autodistruttivi, ne converrete. Bombardiamo la nostra casa, diamo la libertà per scontata, siamo in qualche modo spaventati dall'incontro con realtà diverse dalla nostra. Dovremmo rendere le cose più semplici e godere di questo tipo di arricchimento. L'arte può aiutare a tal fine. Soprattutto se esce dai palazzi, se ci viene incontro nelle strade, in quei piccoli centri dove la campagna fa da cornice. Luoghi dove la natura, l'antico e il contemporaneo si fondono in perfetta armonia. Colle Val d'Elsa ospita un esempio di questa visione poetica. Quella del grande artista Cai Guo-Qiang. Lo conoscete. È quello dei fuochi d'artificio e delle esplosioni, ma qui ha deciso di costruire! Un museo a cielo aperto. Perché far esplodere un museo o costruirne uno - dice - è la stessa cosa. L'arte per connettere le persone. L'arte come ponte. Questa è la metafora che aveva in mente. Qui a Colle ha trovato il ponte adatto per tradurre il suo pensiero in realtà. E sotto le sue arcate ha allestito il museo. Il suo nome, UMoCA. Under Museum of Contemporary Art. E se per caso il vostro obiettivo è quello di andare più a fondo e intraprendere un viaggio ancora più introspettivo, ricordate: questo è il ponte trecentesco che corre tra il Borgo e il Convento di San Francesco. È qui sotto che si può almeno immaginare quel luogo ideale dove vita terrena e spirituale si incontrano. Un luogo dove essere, almeno, una volta nella vita.

I have never been lucky with shooting stars. So I decided to spend the Night of St.Lawrence in a place where I could enjoy them through the eyes of great artists. A place where I'd be able to look at the sky as they knew it and has been depicted through the centuries. I flew so high, up to the stars and taken by hand by a celestial jazz background music.I know many more stars will fall in the coming days and I will give the Universe and myself another try. I will take my time lying with my nose up enjoying that wonderful work of art that is nature.

🇬🇧 I bet you have often wondered, not without sorrow, about your being in the world. Why am I on this earth? What is my purpose? I also bet you know full well you're not the only one. We are Human beings! We are so trivial in our specialness. Curiosity is what we have in common. And discernment as well, both good and powerful things, but also sources of suffering. Peace of mind, more than anything else, seems to be the necessary condition for a happy life. Faith, whatever it may be, can come to our aid in dark times. But we also can walk a different road that can help us to address ourselves the right questions. For this is what life is about. Its name is al- sīmiyā’, the esoteric science of Arabic letters. It does not rule out religion or reasoning but, in order to go down it without stumble, you need to be patience and in the right contemplative state. How an alphabet can point us the way of happiness it is something not easy to get. It is true that, whoever approaches the Islamic culture and its language is overwhelmed by the power and energy of its letters. In many passages the Koran calls on us for reading and as for the Calamus, the reed pen still used today for the calligraphy, it underlines its divine origin. If the Koran is God that made himself a Book, then the universe is a great Koran. And letters are the bridge, the steps to be taken backwards, if compared to the divine revelation, in order to understand the meaning of existence. Having access to our own name, the inner and the esoteric one, meeting our "celestial self" and embracing our true nature. This is the purpose of the journey. "Who am I?" the only question possible. I am ready to fill this page. Are you?

🇮🇹 Scommetto che spesso hai fantasticato, non senza pena, sul tuo essere al mondo. “Perché sono su questa terra? Qual è il mio scopo?” Scommetto anche che sai di non essere l’unico. Siamo esseri umani! Così banali nel nostro essere speciali. La curiosità è ciò che abbiamo in comune. E il discernimento. Entrambe cose buone e potenti, ma anche sorgenti di sofferenza. La pace dello spirito, più di ogni altra cosa, sembra essere la condizione necessaria per una vita felice. La fede, qualunque essa sia, può venirci in aiuto nei momenti bui. Ma possiamo anche scegliere di percorrere una strada diversa che può aiutarci a formulare le domande giuste. Perché è di questo che si tratta. Si chiama al-sīmiyā’, la scienza esoterica delle lettere arabe. Non esclude religione o ragionamento ma, per percorrerla senza inciampi, bisogna avere pazienza e il giusto stato contemplativo. Come un alfabeto possa indicarci la via della felicità è qualcosa di non facile comprensione. Vero è che chi si avvicina alla cultura islamica e alla sua lingua viene travolto dalla potenza e dall'energia delle sue lettere. Il Corano, in molti suoi passaggi, ci chiama alla lettura e del Calamo, la penna di canna ancora oggi usata per la calligrafia, se ne esalta la derivazione divina. Se il Corano è Dio che si è fatto Libro allora l’universo è un grande Corano. E lettere sono il ponte, i passi da percorrere a ritroso rispetto alla rivelazione divina, al fine di decifrare il senso dell’esistenza. Accedere al proprio nome, quello interiore ed esoterico, incontrare il nostro “Io celeste” e abbracciare la nostra vera natura. Questo è lo scopo del viaggio. “Chi sono?” è l’unica domanda possibile. Io sono pronta a riempire questa pagina. E tu?
