Wrote a wee thing for VisitScotland about good places to go birdwatching this autumn.
Autumn is here and what better time to get outdoors and experience the southern realms of Scotland in all its autumnal glory than now.
Hareโs ear fungus (๐๐ต๐ช๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ข ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข). Often found next to paths, this one was on the banking by the side of the road.
The prefix Ono- in the Latin name refers to donkeys. Which name do you prefer, hareโs ear or donkeyโs ear? Another alternative is lemon peel fungus.
Wonderful day out to Silver Flowe and the Devilโs Bowling Green with the this week.
Epic views and my first roundleaf and greater sundew (๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ด๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ช๐ง๐ฐ๐ญ๐ช๐ข and ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ๐ญ๐ช๐ค๐ข) Sundews are carnivorous plants that grow in very low nutrient soils (here growing on sphagnum moss). They catch their prey by catching them in the sticky nectar they produce. The hairs then curl up and entrap the victim and slowly digests it. ๐
The fox moth caterpillar. It was a wet day today doing a survey for the Glenmidge Burn Project, but it added to the magic of this furry beast.
This caterpillar will spend the winter under leaf cover and then build its cocoon in the spring to emerge as a moth.
Flower of Tan (๐๐ถ๐ญ๐ช๐จ๐ฐ ๐ด๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข), a slime mould. Fascinating creature. Also known as scrambled egg slime, dog vomit slime mould or Jasmine slime (which is your favourite?), it is able to survive extremely high levels of zinc, contains antibiotic compounds against Bacillus and Candida, and a whole lot more crazy stuff.
In Scandinavia, it is said to be the vomit of Troll catsโฆ
Volunteering at the this week. Between putting up tents and fixing some plumbing, I went for an exploration of Abbey Home organic farm where the fair is being held.

Day 1 of solo Argyle escapade.
Wet wet wet!
Flowers are common spotted orchid and bog asphodel
This is a Nettle Clustercup Rust fungus (๐๐ถ๐ค๐ค๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ข ๐ถ๐ณ๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข๐ต๐ข). Heard about it yesterday, found it today (or rather did).
This fungus has 5 spore stages, some on nettles and some on sedge. Its life cycle is considered one of the most complex in the living world.
Coltโs-foot (๐๐ถ๐ด๐ด๐ช๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ฐ ๐ง๐ข๐ณ๐ง๐ข๐ณ๐ข) by the Cairn pool.
Popping colours in the gravel. โTussiโ in Latin means cough and โagoโ act upon.
Honey Bees (genus Apis): These are super Pollinators, of which the worker bees only live 4-7 weeks. There are only 7 recognised species of honey bee on the planet although they do break down into 44 subspecies. The main distinction from the 20,000 other species of bees is the production and storage of honey and the construction of perennial, colonial nests from wax. Interesting facts from ๐ beekeepingbasic.com ๐
The less glamorous side of ecology. A day in the rain supervising the taking down of roof in case there are any bats.
Beautiful cold day leading the first community wildlife survey of the Glenmidge Burn Project.
Wild garlic (Allium ursinum) by the kilo, grubs in galls on willow, pig nuts (Conopodium majus) and Opposite-leaves Golden Saxifrage are only very few of the many plants we recorded. Next one on 1st April, get in touch!
Warlockโs butter (๐๐น๐ช๐ฅ๐ช๐ข ๐ฏ๐ช๐จ๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข๐ฏ๐ด). This jelly fungus grows on decaying beech, ash and Hazel. โDubious Edibilityโ says my mushroom guide :)
Lead this wee walk for Glencairn Land & Woods Trust on Saturday. It was lots of fun, we looked and small things very closely.
Iโll be leading this waking this Saturday for the
DM if you want to join!
Hazel (๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐บ๐ญ๐ถ๐ด ๐ข๐ท๐ฆ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข)
One of my favourites. Flowers are already appearing, tiny and anemone-like.
Perfect badger tracks on the side of the road. Going places.
Nothing like a field of ammonite fossils to put your time on Earth into perspective.

Back in Granada after 20 years. I had missed it. Visited all my old haunts in Calle Elvira, the Albaizin and Sacromonte. And then @antoniodelapura โs singing at @eshavira_club gave me shivers and tears in my eyes. Argyll solo trip day 2: The crossbills. A first for me. These finches use their crossed nils to pry open pine cones to get to the kernels. Apologies for the shaky video #crossbill #scotland #rspb #argyle #knapdale #pineforest @rspb.scotland @visitargyllandbute @scottishwildlifetrust
I went out for a little walk and an exploration of the rocks at Mossyard, preparing for the guided walk with @writeswscotland and their planned #beachschoolforwriters. Seahore springtails, barnacles feeding and see through shrimps in a matter of minutes. #natureliteracy #springtails #bluebugs #writesouthwestscotland #beachschool #alouettenaturetours @discoversouthscotland @visitscotland @visitsouthwestscotland
Did some bat surveying last night. As I watched the soprano pipistrelles fly past, I realised I was in a love triangle: I love bats, bats love midges, midges love meโฆ unrequited love across the board. #bats #batsurvey #ecology
Most Greylag Geese in Scotland donโt migrate. They nest here over the summer, and as winter approaches (yes, itโs coming), they gather in large flocks. Soon they will be joined by migrating birds from the North, such as barnacle geese from Svalbard. #natureliteracy #conservation #wildlife #birds #nature #natureawareness #biodiversity #wildlifephotography #floraandfauna #wildlifeofinstagram #dumfriesandgalloway #gsabiosphere #gallowayglens #bto #birdsofinstagram #birdstagram #birdsofscotland #birding #geese #wildgoosefestival #anser #anseranser #morebirdpics @morebirdpics
