The Alaska Railroad offers more than just transportation - it's a living piece of Alaska history! This engineering marvel was completed in 1923, connecting Seward to Fairbanks across 470 miles of challenging terrain.

The railroad played a crucial role in Alaska's development, supporting military operations during WWII and opening up the interior for settlement and resource development. Today's trains still run on some of the original route, crossing massive bridges and traveling through remote wilderness areas where no roads exist. The railroad continues to be vital for both freight and passenger service.

The logistics of the Iditarod are mind-boggling – it's like organizing a marathon that runs through the wilderness for 8-15 days! Volunteers set up and staff 26 checkpoints along the trail, where veterinarians examine the dogs and mushers can rest, eat, and pick up supplies they sent ahead.

Each musher starts with up to 16 dogs and must finish with at least 5, dropping dogs at checkpoints if they're tired or need care. Throughout the race, about 10,000 pairs of booties will protect the dogs' feet, and they'll consume roughly 2,000 calories daily – the equivalent of 40 hamburgers per dog! Teams brave temperatures from -40°F to 35°F, crossing mountain ranges, frozen rivers, and dense forests.

The Iditarod Trail's history runs much deeper than the famous sled dog race. In 1925, this route became legendary during the Nome Serum Run, when mushers relayed diphtheria medicine 674 miles to save the remote town of Nome from an epidemic. The lead dog of the final leg, Balto, became so famous that his statue stands in New York's Central Park. Lesser known is Togo, who led his team through the most dangerous leg of the journey, covering 264 miles and crossing the treacherous Norton Sound. This inspiring tale of courage and determination represents the true spirit of Alaska, where communities still rely on each other's help to survive the harsh winter conditions.

On the surface, this might look like a boring photo, but it tells a story about habitat and wildlife.

Notice that something has been eating the bark off this fallen deciduous tree. Also notice the pellet shaped s**t? Any guesses about the wildlife in this scenario???

Snowshoe hares eat bark throughout the winter, not really having many other options in a snow covered landscape.

As you drive Alaska, try to leave time in the evenings to go for a walk and enjoy the little things. They will help you better understand this magical place.

Did you know that Alaska's moose are the largest subspecies of moose in North America?

These magnificent creatures can weigh up to 1,600 pounds and stand over 7 feet tall at the shoulder. During winter months, they migrate to lower elevations where food is more accessible, making them a common sight along highways and in urban areas.

Their impressive antlers, which only males possess, can span up to 6 feet wide and weigh over 40 pounds. Despite their massive size, moose are excellent swimmers and can dive to feed on aquatic plants.
