It is within many of our African American Heritage Sacred Spaces that we can partake directly of sacredness, experience sacredness with our entire bodies and breathe the sacredness of those whose spirits remain to witness their stories being told.

Scenes from the “Heritage Sacred Spaces Tour” where the history of these locations (a Park and a Garden) were featured between two tours this week! Both are located in downtown Charleston, both hold the significant work as well as the stories of a famed Charlestonian and those who came to emancipate the city. Can you identify these locations?

The Heritage Sacred Spaces Tour's itinerary usually ends on Sullivan's Island: the Place where it all began. Come visit the sites with us that will commemorate not only the de-boarding of the Middle Passage ships which brought captured or enslaved Africans onto the shores of this Charlestons coastal island for quarantine, but also this location was the entry point for almost half of the enslaved who were sold into slavery across America.
Indeed the "Spaces" on the location are "Sacred" because of its fundamental importance in the history of the American Slave Trade.

Also we will add a new site at the National Park location at Fort Moultrie. There we find "The Bench by the Roadside [as it] serves as a reminder for those Africans captured in the slave trade, whose lives were forever changed." There is even more to this story, I can't wait to share with you!

Contrasting the architecture of the rural church versus the city church, both established in the lowcountry, shortly after the end of the Civil War, helps us to see historically how the sacred spaces served different populations of freed people who were rising "up from slavery!" The contrast of architecture and historical stories of many rural churches have been lost yet the history of the city churches, and how the buildings were acquired in the late 1860's-1880's are mostly preserved and available to tell to future generations. Our Heritage Sacred Spaces Tour offers valuable historical facts, and interesting stories to fill in the gaps. You're invited to join us on our next tour. Stay tuned for the date and time!

The Heritage Sacred Spaces Virtual Tour took its first flight on this past weekend. The tour was well attended and a great success! Thanks to all of the attendees and guest speakers that made the tour an enjoyable event for all. One of our special guests, Terrance Washington told the group the story that he captured in the video below! This story helped attendees see how in a rural area of SC, children can be positively affected by the power of art. Terrance is President of the Blackville Music & Art Festival and Creative Connector for the Rural Arts SC: South Carolina Arts Commission Terrance featured his visual art and photography in our Lowcountry Vendor showcase, which can be purchased at www.etsy.com/shop/TWsArtShop
