In December, I visited the UNESCO recognized Pont du Gard. On arrival, I was met with sweeping views of the Gard River and gusty, cold winds. My guide, Laurent, a very witty and eminently knowledgeable gentleman, educated me as we hiked to the bridge. Built in the first century AD, and standing at an impressive height of 48.8 meters (160 feet), it is one of the best-preserved Roman structures in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985. This architectural marvel was designed to carry water over 50 kilometers from Uzès to the Roman colony of Nemausus (modern-day Nîmes). The bridge consists of three tiers of arches, with the lowest level spanning the Gardon River. Constructed without mortar, using precisely fitted limestone blocks, the Pont du Gard showcases the remarkable engineering skills of the Romans. It continued to serve as a toll bridge long after the fall of the Roman Empire.

We walked along the top of this ancient aqueduct and eventually back down to the water below it, where visitors can swim in the gently flowing river in warmer months. I came away overwhelmed with the extent to which I had been a part of not only Roman and French history, but also a very important part of world history.
