১৯৫৩ সালে তিনি যোগ দেন সে সময়ের পাকিস্তান সেনাবাহিনীতে।
মুক্তিযুদ্ধের অন্যতম সেক্টর কমান্ডার হিসেবে বীরত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করেন জিয়াউর রহমান।
দায়িত্ব পালন করেন মুক্তিযুদ্ধের একটি স্বতন্ত্র সেক্টরের।
তার নামে গড়ে ওঠে জেড ফোর্স।

১৯৭৫ সালের ৭ নভেম্বর রাষ্ট্রীয় ক্ষমতার কেন্দ্রবিন্দুতে অধিষ্ঠিত হন জিয়াউর রহমান।
তিনি ১৯৭৮ সালের ১ সেপ্টেম্বর বাংলাদেশ জাতীয়তাবাদী দল (বিএনপি) প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন।
তার প্রতিষ্ঠিত দল বিএনপি তিনবার রাষ্ট্রীয় ক্ষমতায় ছিল।
১৯৮১ সালের ৩০ মে চট্টগ্রাম সার্কিট হাউজে সেনাবাহিনীর একটি অংশের অভ্যুত্থানে নিহত হন জিয়াউর রহমান।

ব্যাপক সমালোচনার মুখে কলরেট ও ইন্টারনেট ব্যবহারসহ তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি সেবার ওপর আরোপিত সম্পূরক শুল্ক থেকে সরে এসেছে জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর)।

শুক্রবার (১৭ জানুয়ারি) এনবিআর সূত্রে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে। সূত্রটি জানিয়েছে, মোবাইল ফোনের সিম কার্ড ব্যবহারের মাধ্যমে টেলিফোন সেবায় (কলরেট, ইন্টারনেট ব্যবহার ইত্যাদি) সম্পূরক শুল্ক ২০ থেকে ২৩ শতাংশ করেছিল এনবিআর। এখন তা কমিয়ে আগের মতো ২০ শতাংশ করার সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে। একইভাবে ইন্টারনেট সংস্থার (আইএসপি) সেবার ওপর আরোপিত ১০ শতাংশ সম্পূরক শুল্কও প্রত্যাহারের সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে এনবিআর। ভ্যাট হার কমানোর এই সিদ্ধান্তের বিষয়টি কয়েক দিনের মধ্যে প্রজ্ঞাপনের মাধ্যমে চূড়ান্ত করা হবে।

এ বিষয়ে এনবিআরের দ্বিতীয় সচিব বদরুজ্জামান মুন্সী বলেন, ‘কয়েক খাতে ভ্যাট বাড়ানোর সিদ্ধান্ত থেকে সরে আসা হয়েছে। সে অনুযায়ী রাজস্ব বোর্ড কার্যক্রম গ্রহণ করেছে। আশা করছি রোববারের মধ্যে এসআরও জারি হবে। আরও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কয়েকটি পণ্যের বিষয়ে আলাপ-আলোচনা চলছে। তবে এখনো কোনো সিদ্ধান্ত হয়নি।’

প্রসঙ্গত, গত ৯ জানুয়ারি শতাধিক পণ্য ও সেবায় শুল্ক কর বাড়িয়ে অধ্যাদেশ জারি করেছিল এনবিআর। এরপর উচ্চ মূল্যস্ফীতির এই সময়ে হঠাৎ করে বিপুলসংখ্যক পণ্য ও সেবায় ভ্যাট বাড়ানোয় ব্যাপক সমালোচনার মুখে পড়ে অন্তর্বর্তী সরকার।
