Autumn explorations of the Kiso and Ina valleys of southern Nagano this week. The Nakasendo is a popular hotspot to walk between the Magome and Tsumago post towns. Beyond the tourist trails there are other fascinating routes including the original shoki nakasendo and the chuma kaido, each with their own compelling stories.

Deep in the Southern Alps something good is brewing. Ikawa Distillery is a new project of passion and precision to create fine Japanese whiskey. Mountain spring water, forests of oak for the casks and an elevation over 1000m, Japan's highest distillery, are a few key elements to create a fine amber liquid. Just a matter of time...

Flying over and around 3000+ metre peaks in Japan's Southern Alps by helicopter was mind blowing. Given it's a 4 hour drive from Shizuoka city just to access the valley trailhead, flying in to hike incredible alpine trails is the ultimate experience. No crowds and drenched in Autumn colours. Very memorable day 😁

is a delicate plant requiring copious amounts of clean flowing water to grow. It was originally discovered in and highly prized for antibacterial properties, making it integral to the flourishing sushi and sashimi culture. Try a gastro-adventure of freshly grated wasabi on a steaming bowl of rice. Simplicity is all you need to appreciate the full potency of this superfood.

One of the best fish sandwiches hands down. Guri is a little cafe and bnb in Ina, a fishing village on the coast of Kyoto. Kyoto by the sea is often overlooked, yet offers some great back roads for a cycling adventure, or self-drive trip.

This is the approach into Hongu Taisha on the Kumano Kodo. From a distance, Japan's tallest Torii (33.9m) gate is dwarfed by the surrounding mountains, yet it dwarfs us as we approach it. Kind of puts everything into perspective when making this journey. The ubiqutious Torii ⛩️ demarks stepping into the realm of 'kami' or spirits.

I've been lucky to call Nozawa Onsen my home for the past year or so. It's been a comforting haven during these tough times that we all face in the travel industry. With the arrival of winter, the landscape transforms completely to a quiet stillness. It was a pleasure to read Greg's snowshoe experience in this article. Click and have a read. I hope you enjoy it too.

Learn of one author's trip to Nozawa Onsen in Nagano, and the adventures he had snowshoeing, wildlife spotting, and hot springing!

Rediscovering Japan

In March 2019, I took a few months off to go on a family road trip around Japan. It was time for reflection and a bit of breathing space. We enjoyed the tail end of the snow season with friends in Nozawa Onsen, before heading South to Shikoku and Kyushu to explore little towns and places that see very few visitors. Even though I lived in Japan for 12 years, I had never visited these areas and it was a rediscovery of just how incredible Japan is.

A friend of mine, Mike Harris, had reached out earlier about starting a travel business in Japan. We’d had a few conversations, but it was this trip that confirmed this was an idea worth pursuing. I had my ‘aha’ moment and from here it all started to crystalize. We packed up our life in Queenstown, New Zealand, and made the move back to Japan to start a new business.

Just as we were ready to launch, COVID-19 put a quick stop to global travel. Not ideal timing to launch a travel business perhaps, but we are prepared to be patient and use this ‘quiet’ time to research and refine what sort of travel adventures we can deliver and inspire others with.

I believe this pandemic has made the entire industry rethink about how we consume travel. Last year saw ‘peak tourism’ in places like Kyoto, as well as other global destinations. This to me confirmed we are on the right track with a vision to travel actively (human-powered modes as much as possible!), off the beaten path and in small numbers.
