The view from Carvers Gap on Roan Mountain, TN. Roan Mountain is the highest point in Tennessee outside the Great Smoky Mountains. It rises to an elevation of 6,285 ft. The AT crosses the mountain here at Carvers Gap.
The town of Roan Mountain lies at 2550 ft on the mountain and was founded in the 1880s by John Wilder, a Union general.
