Yesterday we visited Porvoo Holmin talo museum. The house was built in 1763 after the big fire by a rich family in Porvoo. The exhibition with an authentic atmosphere tells vividly the Finnish family life of 18th century, for example what to eat and how to decorate during the Christmas.

There are full of arguments about the cultures and everyday life. Three perspectives might be interesting to take in an account, when you are going to visit the exhibition.

1) objects made by man,
2) customs and norms,
3) language.

The 59th Venice Biennale opens its door from 23.4 to 27.11.2022. What art can do and what art will inspire us during this difficult time of ongoing pandemic and war?

The title of the main exhibition is "The Milk of Dreams", an illustration book from surrealist artist Leonora Carrington. The book is written in a poetic way with fascinating strange illustrations. It is not a nightmare, but a strange and weird dream. Rather than frightening and horrible, it invites readers to think, to wonder and to ponder. The main exhibition in Giardini and continuing in Arsenale presents the exactly the same tone as fantacy in my eyes.

Yes, a fantacy!

The author of "The lord of rings" J. R. R. Tolkien said,

"the mind... also conceived of magic that would make heavy things light and able to fly, turn grey lead into yellow gold, and the still rock into swift water. If it could do the one, it could do the other; it inevitably did both. When we can take green from grass, blue from heaven, and red from blood, we have already an enchanter’s power … and the desire to wield that power in the world external to our minds awakes."

It was yesterday, a performantic painting, Painting Against the Barrier was shown at Porvoo Tori. The final moment feels like a battle field, the burning board, the bleeding colors, and the swirling leaves...

Pinecrest Villa locates at the beautiful seaside in Porvoo Emäsalo island. The hostess lady Lu is a nature scientist from Japan. Now her passion is to apply her knowledge into building an eco community. When she found invasive plants poses a threat to the houses and local ecology, she decided to turn the waste into a treasure, making paper, one of the most ancient human inventions.

Walking on the beach, once again, I am amazed by the nature. How beautiful and rich it is and how little we knew about it. However, it is definitely a hope when science meeting art.

Texts give the voices for the feelings and thinkings, while the visual images constantly inspire, surprise, and bring us new feelings and experiences...

The endless dialogue between the text and the image offers us an inspirational afternoon that we have the chance to walk through and experience among the different spaces: art gallery, 6 rooms created by 6 artists, important space of each participant's own life, mental space, inner space, the space behind the space...

There are 6 pages with full of keywords corresponding to the 6 rooms in the exhibition. The text are from two parts: all the written texts are from our participants' life experiences; the printed texts are from the online resources about artists. Thus we are connected! When thinking about the concept of Space, one article came into my mind immediately: Space and Place. It is a farewell lecture from Yi-Fu Tuan, in 2014.

Yi-Fu Tuan (Chinese: 段義孚; December 5, 1930 – August 10, 2022) was a Chinese-born American geographer. He was one of the key figures in human geography and arguably the most important originator of humanistic geography.

In this paper, he opens a new space for all of us, a space of hope, a space beyond the limitation of place. Here he says,

"His body, tied by his senses to the environment, is place; his mind, freed from such sensory ties, is space."

One of the crucial crisises we are facing is an irreversible separation, the separation from what we relying on, dear mother, homeland, nature... Fortunately, the space introduced by Yi-Fu Tuan positively reconnects us like imagination and art.

When I am writing this small paragraph, I found online, that Mr. Tuan just passed away a month ago. I am sure he and his thoughts will take the space with us forever. Farewell!

A guided tour for the art exhibition “6 Spaces/ 6 Rum/ 6 Tilaa” welcomes you this Friday, 23th. September, at Näsin kartano Porvoo.

The art exhibition, 6 Spaces / 6 Rum / 6 Tilaa is organized by the Porvoo Artists’ Association and curated by Krista Mikkola. 6 artists with their own unique language create 6 different spaces.

This guided tour, inspired by the artists, will invite you to discuss and explore the concept of Space / Rum / Tilaa.

The participatory tour includes the workshop and gallery visit from 16:00-17:30.

Back to 2018, I was studying in Aalto University. The course, Museum Pedagogy, really inspires me. It invites me to a trip of rethinking. Think again back to the basics: why art matters to US?!

I asked the same question to the Museum director, and I still remembered her reply:

It is just a meaningful moment When you are asking the meaning of the art.

This project ART/WALK (art,talk,walk) is a participatory guided tour, which invites you to walk in the art world and talk about what matters to you, to us, and to our lives.
