here the Vikings landed in 793, we're truly spoilt for beauty and history in Northumberland. On this page you can see a fraction of where you can visit email, phone or messenger and I'll help you plan and maximise your day or days in Northumberland. If you are travelling by train to the Northeast, Morpeth is my station of choice to begin from heading North, Hexham station for Hadrians Wall, I do also collect from Central station in Newcastle. I will collect your party within a 20 mile radius of Morpeth, if further please get in touch as it might be possible. Entry fees to castles, Roman sites and tour guides (where available) are all included for the day excluding boat trips. I would recommend a pack lunch for people wanting to fill their day as much as possible but I'm absolutely flexible, it is your day! I will advise you on recommended clothing and footwear, for your planned day. Holy island and the Puffin boat trip from Amble are tide sensitive and will need to be checked by myself before visit, the Farne Island boat trips sail on all tides. Some walks are more arduous than others, depending on your fitness and capabilities I wouldn't recommend to all. There are no walks over 3 miles (there and back) and they have an Ordnance Survey rating of moderate. I can offer kayaking and coasteering as well for the more adventurous. I am flexible with duration of tour and will advise on where you could possibly see more and get the most from your trip. The site of Vindolanda Roman Fort in Northumberland, England, has yielded thousands of leather shoes dating back about 1,900 years, although very few are matching pairs. This is one of just a few surviving pairs ever excavated here at the fort.

This fragment of an ancient timekeeping device was found during excavations between the east granary and the headquarters building in 2008. It is a piece of the rim of a much larger object, known as calendrical clepsydra, which is known from fewer than a half dozen similar artefacts. It was used to measure the hours of the day, by tracking the level of water in a bowl as it dripped out a small hole in the bottom. This fragment is labelled with the name of the month (September), the first of the month (the kalends), the fifth of the month (thenones), the thirteenth (the ides), and the equinox (aequinoctium).
This artefacts is on display in the Vindolanda museum.

The beautiful Warkworth castle under the glow of sunset 💛🧡 the first records of a castle here start mid 12th century, the castle then was most likely made of timber and was was left undefended when the Scots invaded.
The castle fell into disrepair several times over history, English Heritage now manage and maintain the site. The castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, a “nationally important” historic building and archaeological site which has been given protection against unauthorised change. It is also a Grade I listed building (first listed in 1985) and recognised as an internationally important structure. The castle continues to be officially owned by the Percy family, currently being owned by the 12th Duke of Northumberland.

White waters just before the , breaking on the rocks in front of Bamburgh Castle on the coast.
This is my absolutely favourite time of day, the few moments as blue hour gives way to golden hour, this (in my opinion) is when the light and atmosphere is at its best!

Taken last night from Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle (5 miles away) and the (almost) full moon. We had to wait until around 10pm for the alignment and it was worth it, the water was illuminated a beautiful golden colour by the moonlight.
We thought someone was flying a drone above is as it was getting dark, and then we looked up - hundreds of insects lining us up for a meal, we are still counting the bites! 🤣

Holy Island
Overnight stay for the early morning Holy Island loop before the tides lets the masses on.
Etal Castles Tower House
The tower house is a fine example of a strong and well-designed residence of the 14th century. Directly above this basement, with its 2.5m-thick walls and barrel-vaulted ceiling (now destroyed), was the hall. On the second floor was the private chamber of the owners, the Manners, and later their constables, the Collingwoods. Both rooms were comfortable and equipped with large fireplaces, traceried windows and latrine chambers built into the walls. The third floor contained a barrack room for the guards.
Etal Castles Tower House
The four-storey tower house contained the main living accommodation of the castle. It was built a little before, 1 34l and strengthened before 1368. The floors were linked by a spiral staircase in the now-demolished forebuilding. On the left-hand side you can see how this forebuilding was joined to the tower. On the right are the remains of the staircase. Two holes for drawbars and the slots for a portcullis are visible at the entrance. On the south wall of the tower, wooden stairs once led up to the doorway that opened into the first floor.

Ros Castle
Ros Hill, is also known as Ros Castle due to the 3,000-year-old Iron Age hill fort on its summit. The summit is marked by a triangulation station and nearby there is a walk-in toposcope built into the wall with four separate plaques with a 360 degree panoramic view, on a clear day, a total of seven castles can be seen from the summit, including the one on Holy Island
Linhope Spout
Hike up to Linhope Spout following the amount of rain we’ve all been receiving, widest I’ve seen the falls and could hear it from further than usual.
First walk along Hadrians Wall since the summer past Sycamore Gap, definitely a huge miss not seeing the tree when coming over the hill from milecaste 39.
River Wansbeck here in Morpeth looking more like the Zambezi River, thankfully it has started to recede.
