Safari Tourist Train
A great initiative of the Pakistan railways. The safari tourist train starts from the rawalpindi railway station every Sunday at 9am. The train has economy compartment and an a/c parlour. The seats were good and comfortable. The train was very clean with adjustable seats, tv screen, fan, dustbin, power socket and top compartment for keeping stuff.
The train starts with the beat of the drums and who can do it better than our local Dhol walas. They accompanied us throughout the journey and at every station beat their drums.
The first stop is Golra station which is convenient for those getting on from Islamabad.
Next the train stops at HassanAbdal, Attock City station and lastly at Attock Khurd.
Most of these had a museum showing the railway history and things used by the railways years ago.
The stations were clean, though need proper tuck shops, atleast one!
The last station was most fun as it had the attock bridge on top of the majestic river Indus. The bridge was built by engineers from London in the 19th century. You can go down for a boat ride too if the train stops longer.
Experience over all was 8/10.

Enjoying the train ride in the khewra salt mines

Khewra Salt Mines.. the second largest salt mines in the world!
From the motorway, take the lilla interchange and another 26 kilometers till you reach the salt mines. These 26 km are the rough patch..You have to purchase visitor tickets at the entry. If you are a student then take your student id card for a reduced entry fee. An added feature is to purchase the train tickets and a tour guide will also be there to explain the whole mine visit.
You will see three kinds of salt; pink, white and red. Pink and white salt are consumable while red salt serves industrial purposes.
Inside the mine, a salt mosque and Minar e Pakistan are made. Coloured lights make the mine quite attractive. You feel relaxed in the mine. The whole process of digging and ventilation in the mines is explained. At some places the rainwater seeps down and has formed lakes.
There is an area called the seesh mahal, it has the finest quality of salt and according to a myth anybody who kicks salt twice will never fail in examinations..
There is an asthma treatment Centre at one of the mine levels. Patients are kept for a few days to treat asthma..
You will find many salt made items at affordable prices near the mine. Make sure to purchase some as you will think about ghem later on.
Good experience other than the 26kms from lilla exchange!
