📍Hoi An, Vietnam

The charming town of Hoi An is located in the Central region of Vietnam. It’s architecture is a culmination of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influence dating back to the 14th century. The towns greatest allure, however, is the unmissable silk lanterns that adorn every house, boat, and lamp post as far as the eye can see.

Tourists flock here to experience this aesthetic as well as to participate in the Lantern Festival. The festival is celebrated on the 14th day of the lunar month when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. The full moon holds extreme significance in the Buddhist calendar and visitors can expect to celebrate alongside locals and their families. During the festival hundreds of colorful lanterns are lit and placed in the Hoai River symbolizing wishes of love, luck, and happiness.

A brief history: Silk lanterns were brought to the port town of Hoi An by Chinese and Japanese merchants who came to the port town to trade and settle. It is said that these merchants used to hang the lanterns in front of their houses and it was quickly emulated by the local Vietnamese. After more than 400 years the tradition of lantern making is still flourishing in the ancient town. It makes for a great daytime activity and the perfect souvenir. 🏼 via .app

📍GuĂ°rĂșnarlaug Hot Spring

It’s not all cold in Iceland and even when it is, seeking out a natural thermal pool is the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. â„ïžđŸŒ‹

The one pictured here is known as GuĂ°rĂșnarlaug. The original hot tub was destroyed by a landslide over 100 years ago but was revamped in a similar location. The area is meant to resemble what is thought to be the likeness of the Viking hot pools from around 1000 years ago.

The name GuĂ°rĂșnarlaug comes from the LaxdĂŠla Saga, a well known Icelandic saga dating back to the 13th century. The story reveals a complicated love triangle involving GuĂ°rĂșn ÓsvĂfursdĂłttir, a woman who spent a lot of time by the hot pool. Two men, raised as brothers, fell for GuĂ°rĂșn, leading to a twisted and tragic fate for them both. 😧

The hot spring is open to the public and is free of charge. I’ve heard that the spring can get quite crowded but we had it to ourselves for a while before we were joined by two lovely couples. Being that it’s just off of the Ring Road, I highly recommend visiting GuĂ°rĂșnarlaug Hot Spring. 🚐

Carved into the mountainside of Abu Simbel, near Egypts southern border, lies the astonishing Temple of Ramesses II. The temple was completed during the 13th century BC and dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian gods Ptah, Amun, and Ra-Horakhty.

The front of the temple depicts 4 colossal statues of Ramesses II at a staggering 65 feet tall. On either sides of his legs are smaller carvings of his mother, favorite wife Nefertari, and favorite sons and daughters. How do we know they were his favorite? It’s not too hard to figure out. Ramesses II was a busy man. 😅 He had many wives and concubines who bore him over 100 children, most of which he outlived.

Inside the temple, the walls and columns depict his “victory” at the Battle of Kadesh against the Hittites in Syria. In truth, he didn’t actually win the battle but lied to his people in a political move to gain respect and admiration. So did the opposing Hittite king. đŸ€·đŸœâ€â™€ïž

What actually happened was that both parties entered a negotiation which led to an agreement to work together and come to each others aid if attacked by a foreign enemy. This agreement was known as the first ever recorded peace treaty. 📝

Perhaps the most significant thing about the temple is the design in relation to the sun. Every year on October 22 and February 22 the sun shines directly through the temples entrance illuminating the faces of the statue gods, (excluding Ptah, as he is the god of the underworld). ☀ The dates are said to represent the great Pharaoh’s birthday and the day he was crowned king. An astonishing architectural feat for the time!

During the 1960’s, in an effort to save the monument from flooding after the construction of the High Dam, UNESCO sponsored the relocation of the area to higher ground. Stone by stone the temple was disassembled and made anew. The project is considered to be one of the greatest engineering challenges in history. ⛏

Unknown to most, Iceland’s most iconic attraction, The Blue Lagoon, is actually wastewater from the nearby geothermal power plant. đŸ«ą

Underground lava flows heat up a combination of fresh and salt water creating pressure that generates turbines that supply electricity to the region.âšĄïž Yay, sustainable energy! The water is then fed into the lagoon carrying mineral rich water.

The lagoon’s milky blue waters are a result of the abundance of silica and the reflection of light.

The Blue Lagoon is said to have natural healing properties and be beneficial for the skin. It is NOT, however, good for your hair. I let my hair down once for some pics and the ends of my hair felt so dry and damaged for weeks after!

My suggestion: When you take the mandatory shower before you enter the lagoon, leave some conditioner in your hair and keep it pulled back. I cringe looking back on all the girls I saw swimming underwater. 😬

Hello world! 🌎
I’m Britt, a thirty something year young, introverted extrovert, coffee connoisseur ☕, wine fanatic đŸ·, and amateur drone enthusiast đŸ“·. I have a passion for seeing new places and immersing myself in foreign cultures. I traded in society’s standard 9-5 for a life rich in experiences. I realized a long time ago that I never needed lots of money or material things to be happy. I’m driven by curiosity and I just have to know what else is out there.
My friends consider me the frugal one. I work hard and I save harder. 💾 But it’s not all work and no play. With no debt and no children (yet) I have been fortunate to travel to 5 continents and over 20 countries. My journey is FAR from over. 😉
People always ask me, “How do you do it?” In truth there isn’t one simple answer. Everyone is different and has their own responsibilities. However, I refuse to let this always be the excuse. It is possible to get out there and see the world and I encourage EVERYONE to do it. That’s exactly why I am here. To offer advice, tips, and tricks for budget and solo travel. And allow everyone to see the world through my eyes with the hope to inspire you to do the same. đŸ˜ŒđŸ™đŸŒ
With that being said, welcome to my page. It’s nice to meet you! đŸ‘‹đŸŒ
