đHoi An, Vietnam
The charming town of Hoi An is located in the Central region of Vietnam. Itâs architecture is a culmination of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influence dating back to the 14th century. The towns greatest allure, however, is the unmissable silk lanterns that adorn every house, boat, and lamp post as far as the eye can see.
Tourists flock here to experience this aesthetic as well as to participate in the Lantern Festival. The festival is celebrated on the 14th day of the lunar month when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. The full moon holds extreme significance in the Buddhist calendar and visitors can expect to celebrate alongside locals and their families. During the festival hundreds of colorful lanterns are lit and placed in the Hoai River symbolizing wishes of love, luck, and happiness.
A brief history: Silk lanterns were brought to the port town of Hoi An by Chinese and Japanese merchants who came to the port town to trade and settle. It is said that these merchants used to hang the lanterns in front of their houses and it was quickly emulated by the local Vietnamese. After more than 400 years the tradition of lantern making is still flourishing in the ancient town. It makes for a great daytime activity and the perfect souvenir. đź via .app
