Aurora season 2025 is off to a grand start! The first trips of the year were welcomed to town by warm temperatures followed by a day-long blizzard. The blizzard blew in cold temperatures (with a windchill temp of -63F!) and clear skies for aurora viewing.

Finished the first half of my Iceland summer with Natural Habitat Adventures' circumnavigation of Iceland trip. These Atlantic puffins sure were stunning in their breeding colours!

Northern lights season wrapped up with a bang, but spring still hasn't arrived in southern Manitoba either! This great grey owl has been hanging around my house for the past 10 days - the snow around here has a significant melt-refreeze layer that prevents it from effectively hunting. Our yard, however, has exposed grass and (presumably) lots of rodents. Hoping for a quick spring progression for me and the birds!

Despite their common name, the saltwater crocodile can be found in anything from freshwater to brackish to saltwater habitats. Overhunted and subject to killing for its skin during the late 20th century, populations in Australia have undergone a substantial recovery and population estimates now range from 100,000-200,000 in the country.
On our recent trip we had the luck to see a mature female as well as juveniles and a recent hatchling - definitely not a river system to swim in!

Aaaand we're back! Polar bear season is in full swing with . All we're happy this week to spot our first big male of the season after seeing multiple family groups and subadult bears.
