5 Tips for New Wheelchair Users:

1. Get comfortable with your chair

It's important to study your chair and make sure it's a good fit for your body, but also learning to navigate it and learning to get around is so important.

2. Build a community of support

Surround yourself with the people who will support you during your hardest times and make sure they are lifting you up and not bringing you down.

3. Learn about accessibility

It's so important to know your rights and how to speak up for yourself. It doesn't ever hurt to read ADA laws and learn about accessibility features in your community.

4. Prioritize self care

Take care of your physical and emotional well-being. Focus on things that make you feel good about yourself.

5. Connect with others

There are so many people who have been a part of this community for years, and we are here for you. Online communities, support groups, or local organizations are a great place to start to connect with others who may have a similar story or if nothing else can relate to similar struggles.

We navigated camping with some good friends last weekend for the first time since my injury. It was so nice to be present with nature and good company.

I can't wait to share more from our trip. 🤍🏕✨️

Last Saturday, I had the incredible opportunity to speak at Independence is Golden - Texas 2025 which was Canine Companions 50th Anniversary Gala, and on top of that I had the opportunity to film my story with my incredible service dog, Jojo VI, so here it is. 💙💛✨️

Thank you will never be enough. ❤️

✨️Independence is GOLDEN✨️

It was such an honor to attend and speak at the Canine Companions 50th anniversary gala, Independence is Golden Texas, at the legendary Southfork Ranch.

It was a beautiful evening full of some of the best dogs and the best people, raising funds for an organization that is changing so many lives.

A brief piece of my speech that I wanted to share:

"I'm still not sure why I was one of the incredibly fortunate people to be gifted this amazing service dog, but I will spend the rest of my life full of thanks and the rest of Jojo's life loving her with my whole heart because she truly saved me. Her presence has brought happiness back into my life, and I'm forever grateful. To everyone who knows me, it's no secret that Jojo has been my lifeline, so I can say to all of you in this room that you are a huge part of my story, of my recovery, my survival, and of finding myself again.

To the donors, volunteers, trainers, puppy raisers, and everyone involved with Canine Companions - your selfless contributions, tireless efforts, and unwavering dedication are truly transforming lives. My story is just one example of the profound impact your work has on individuals and families."

I will share our featured video soon. 🐕‍🦺💛💙✨️

5 of my favorite accessible things to do near Appleton, Wisconsin:

Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass
This museum has so many different beautiful and unique displays as well as a beautiful exterior area full of plenty to explore. There is a ramp to enter, push plates on the entering doors, an accessible restroom, and wide pathways throughout.

Action Trackchair at Plamann Park
What an incredible experience! Trying out the Action Trackchair reminded me that there is hope for accessible equipment. I got to try out the chair and take it on trails through beautiful trees that I never would have got to see otherwise. The park is beautiful, and there are accessible restrooms on site.

Trout Museum of Art
Another great museum stop! This is on College Ave. which is a busier area with plenty to do nearby. All floors are accessible via elevator, and there are pushplates to enter the main entrance.

Axe Throwing at Appleton Axe
I never thought I would try my hand at axe throwing, but with an amazing mentor, we had a wonderful time. This was such a fun atmosphere and a great workout, too!

Visit the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center
If you are into performing arts, definitely check out the performing arts center while visiting. The accessibility here was incredible-from large print and braille programs upon request to accessible push plates in the building as well as a few different seating options.

5 of my favorite activities I've done since being paralyzed:

-Held sloths in Roatan, Honduras
-Went whale watching in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
-Tested out the Action Trackchair in Appleton, Wisconsin
-Went back to Disney with my service dog
-Road the White Pass Summit Train in Skagway, Alaska

I'm sharing this as a reminder that our lives don't end when we become disabled. There is so much beauty to life. It just may look a little different. ❤️‍🩹

5 of my favorite accessible places to visit in Norman, Oklahoma

Ruby Grant Park
This is the perfect park for anyone. The playground area is smooth and NOT full of sand or wood chips. There are 8 foot paved trails, plenty of accessible parking, and an accessible restroom with an adult sized changing station.

Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art
If you love museums, I would definitely recommend checking this one out. There are elevators on all levels, entrance doors with push plates, accessible seating in the auditorium, and they also have wheelchairs and walkers available to use.

Norman Farmers Market
I've always loved farmers' markets because it's a great opportunity to support local and shop small businesses. Luckily, with an indoor facility, they are able to offer a year-round market. There is accessible parking available and nice accessible restrooms.

Downtown Norman
This part of the town offers a variety of restaurants, coffee shops, fun little stores, and Pinot's Palette for your artistic side. There is accessible parking throughout, and accessibility varies depending on the business.

Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History
This really is a great place to learn more about Oklahoma. There are interactive exhibits, plenty of open space, and nice accessible restrooms. There is plenty of accessible parking out front.
