Finn Hill Getaway: Under Construction

The beauty is in the details. Over the last several months, progress is happening little by little. Fixtures are being hung. Blinds have been installed. The movable island and above details have been finished. Finn Hill is getting close to completion.

I took these pictures three years ago today. I have taken this journey one day at a time. Some days, I felt pride and accomplishment. Other days, I felt like I was going backwards. Fast forward to three years today and I see how far I've come. It's not yet complete, but I am so close and I cannot wait to share my home with fellow history and story buffs that can appreciate this home as much as I do. 💙

My new (old) doors were installed a couple of weeks ago!

These doors were the original doors within the home. I stripped them down, leaving some layers of love, and then handed them over to a professional to work his magic and convert them over to barn style doors. I cannot get over how much I am in love! They look absolutely beautiful, and they save on space. They have far exceeded my original vision, and I feel grateful every time I look at them. And not just because the bathroom has privacy! 😉

I am in love with my new doors!!

These doors are the originals to the home. I stripped them down. Left a bit of the history within them. Sent my babies off to a professional to turn them into sliding doors. Got a peek at them a couple days ago, and I am in complete awe. I can't wait to share them with you all once they are complete. This is gonna be one of my favorite features.

I know this looks like a complete mess, but it is my beautiful mess.

For more than a hundred years, this house was the caterpillar. The last couple of years, I have been wrapping it within its own little cocoon. It's been a messy stage, but just wait until the butterfly rises. It is going to be a gorgeous sight to see. 🦋

And so it begins. I am feeling all sorts of feelings right now.

This porch was built as part of the original structure of this home. I have dated it as far back at 1888. I really wish it could stay. However, it is rotting, unstable, and simply, not safe.

A new porch will be built in its place in the days and weeks ahead. It will not be the same, but I hope it will hold just as many memories as the old one.

Stay tuned as the outside of this beauty transforms.

About one year ago, this is where the progress stood on this little project of mine. I have come a long way in one year. This is what I need to remember when I look at all that still needs to be done. A LOT of progress has been made in one year. Just think where this beauty will be in one year!

And to address the most frequently asked question ... When will Finn Hill Getaway be complete? My new TENTATIVE deadline is July 2022, but let's say Summer 2022 just to be safe. :)

Two more rooms primed today and ready for color. In other news, I am looking to hire a personal masseuse to work on this permanent kink in my neck. Ceilings are no joke friends. 😬

Hidden Treasure in the Cellar

The original dirt cellar from the original structure built in the late 1800s still exists. Large rocks, dirt amongst the cracks and crevices, it is here where you can truly feel the age of this home.

When I was a young child visiting my great grandparents, I was fascinated with this place. I could dig in the dirt, the coolest place to be on a hot summer day. Of course, my great grandfather would yell at me, tell me I was going to make the house collapse, and I would roll my eyes thinking the old story teller was speaking fiction again. Today, I realize it was one of his many truths.

If you look closely under the old shelves in this area, old newspapers still remain, now one with the old dirt walls. They are placed like wallpaper, but I doubt they were used for style. As with many of the changes over the years, I would guess that it was utilitarian in nature.

To many, these walls may look filthy. The old papers wilting and crackling, and showing their age. To me, they are part of the mystery and the story of its survival. To me, these walls are one of the most beautiful hidden treasures of Finn Hill.

It was two years ago that I began this journey. The home was crumbling and hollow. The outside may not look much different today, but the inside is stronger and more beautiful than ever before.

Greetings from Central Montana!

I have not posted many updates lately because progress on Finn Hill Getaway has once again come to a halt. I hope to see work begin again in the near future as most work from this point forward is external. And, we need to have warmer weather to move forward.

In the meantime, I leave you with this beauty taken just outside of town a couple weeks ago. I love living surrounded by this beauty!

Today, three local teens teamed up to help this girl out, and now we have a working washer and dryer!

This has been a struggle with the professionals now for months. I knew what was wrong, but I would just get looks and reactions like I was crazy. I showed these young men what needed to be done, and they dove right in to fix it with such great attitudes.

Voila! Done! My heart is happy! I never knew appliances could be so beautiful!

Sneaking a peek into the finished shower.

In the original bathroom, you barely had room to move. In the newly expanded room, we now have plenty of space complete with a new spacious shower stall, laundry capabilities, and a beautiful distressed cabinet to hold linens and supplies, all in addition to the usual washroom needs. There are still a few last minute touch-ups to do before this room becomes complete, but it is now fully functional.

My son's favorite saying is, "When life gives you lemons..."; yet, he never finishes the sentence. I actually love it. Because I like to complete the sentence on my own.

When life gives you lemons ...

I decide to delay the completion date. Again. Life has thrown me a few different surprises. It has made me re-evaluate and has me brewing some creative juices. Those surprises have been a positive and/or a blessing in disguise.

When life gives you lemons ...

I decide to take it one day at a time. I decide to take it one room at a time. I decide to take it one item here and there at a time. And, slowly but surely, this little beauty will become complete.

When life gives you lemons ...

I decide to savor the little things one moment at a time, and eventually, you will be able to as well.

So many details to get caught up in. So many decisions on those details. At some point, you just gotta choose and await the beauty as it comes together. Thankful for those people that can help my dreams and vision to become a reality ... and put my mind at ease as I watch their talents unfold into a gorgeous masterpiece.
