Hotel Esmares
Hotel Esmares can be found down one of San Francesc’s cobbled streets. It’s small, home to just 18 rooms, and family-run. The location in the capital is prime but different from sandy alternatives; it’s setz amid boutiques and restaurants as opposed to bars and beaches. The name is inspired by the distinguishable Spanish sandstone that it's built from, and it’s an understated yet beautiful hotel with a pure, natural aesthetic. In terms of facilities, it ticks all the boxes, with its pool, spa and in-house restaurant, but its pull lies in the ease of stepping outside and experiencing what the local culture has to offer.

Casa Pacha
If there’s one chain hotel that’s worthy of a place on Formentera, it’s Casa Pacha; the original Ibiza super-club hosted its after-parties on the tiny neighbouring island of Espalmador in its 1970s heyday, and it’s renowned for bringing barefoot hedonism to the Balaerics. The Migjorn beach outpost comprises 16 rooms, each decorated with natural materials. Wood, concrete, and linen in a neutral palette make it impossibly chic (and a far cry from anything red-cherry-related). You’d be forgiven for mistaking this bolthole for a stand-alone boutique guesthouse. The beach restaurant captures the very essence of what makes Formentera so laidback. Long sharer tables are an open invitation to stay as long as you like, so make a lazy transition from the all-day dining menu to sunset tapas while swapping anecdotes with new acquaintances.

The Hermione, Morbihan
The Hermione house would be an enjoyable stay no matter where it was placed. But it just so happens to be floating in the middle of a lake, making it all the more desirable. Found near a Morbihan golf course in Brittany, the house can only be reached by rowboat from the reception pontoon. Once you arrive, there’s a covered deck with lounge chairs and a ladder right into the water, plus floor-to-soaring-ceiling windows so you can enjoy the views from every level of the house. The space inside is cosy and rustic, with a modern bathroom and well-equipped kitchen. Breakfast is provided in the mornings, best enjoyed outside while taking in the lush views.

Blár, Hella
It’s hard to imagine anything more picturesque and remote than this Airbnb, located on an (often snow-covered) lava desert in the south of Iceland. The otherworldly setting could be enough to warrant a stay, but what’s even more of a drawcard is the cottage itself. Floor to ceiling windows surround the property, including the bathroom so you can shower while admiring views of volcanoes. The bedroom is completely covered in glass including the roof, so you can sleep under the spectacular stars – and if you’re lucky some Northern Lights – while in complete cosy comfort. The overall space is very Hygge with chic natural elements paired with clever design. In addition to cosy jumpers and socks, don’t forget to pack your swimming costume – there’s a hot tub on the terrace outside.

Litchfield, Connecticut
Guests at this Connecticut home have access to the entire 170-acre property, including a covered bridge, swimming and kayaking in the private pond, and of course the beautiful views throughout the estate. The home is a masterfully refurbished silo and offers a warm, cozy atmosphere thanks to its wood-panelled walls and exposed beams. The bedrooms are both lofts that open to the larger living space, making it a great option for families.

Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico
One to consider for your next trip, take the drive from California to Mexico's Valle de Guadalupe (one of our favorite road trips) and stay in this bubble Airbnb to see both stars and grapes from its vineyard location. There are actually 10 bubble rooms on site, each with their own private bathroom, full-sized bed, coffee maker, and mini bar. If you're worried about the privacy of, well, a clear room, know that there are hay bales between each accommodation and curtains so you don't feel totally exposed.

Glacier National Park, Montana
One of the most sought-after hikes in Glacier National Park is the Garden Wall Trail, and for good reason. Puffy white beargrass juts out alongside tiny asters and blush-tinged fireweed on this portion of the popular Highline Trail. Due to the park’s northern locale (it shares a border with Canada), July and August are prime time for flower viewing, though the infamous yellow glacier lilies begin popping out of the snowfields in June. More casual hikers might want to pivot to the 2.7-mile Hidden Lake Overlook Trail, with striking views of Clements Mountain and the Garden Wall. Outside the park, grab a huckleberry bear claw pastry at the Polebridge Mercantile before nestling into The Mooseshroom’s amenity-rich campsites or a nearby yurt, a mere eight-minute drive from West Glacier.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina and Tennessee
As one of the most biologically diverse national parks (the area boasts over 1,500 species of flowering plants), the Smokies come alive each spring with a colorful carpet of thyme-leaved bluets. Plus, as one of the lower elevation parks on this list, the blossoming season starts early. Peak bloom occurs from late March through July, with the park’s annual Wildflower Pilgrimage landing in mid-May. Luxury seekers can’t miss staying (and eating) at Blackberry Farm, a plush, chef-driven resort just 20 minutes from the park, while glampers will adore the cozy safari tents at Under Canvas, a quick 9-mile drive away. Within the park, make sure to check out the ¾-mile Cove Hardwood Nature Trail, or push bigger miles and chase a couple of waterfalls on the Deep Creek Trail.

Huntington Beach, California
There’s a reason that Huntington Beach is known as Surf City USA: It’s everything one would expect from a town created by and for surfers. The US Open of Surfing takes place in this sunny southern California town every September, thanks to waves that are some of the most consistent in the world, while also being challenging enough for the pros. After hitting the water, explore the sport’s history at the International Surfing Museum and check out statues of notable figures along the Surfing Walk of Fame. For friends and family that don’t surf and want to tag along, we promise sitting on the warm sand and watching the action in the water is plenty of fun. Afterward, pop into Pasea Hotel’s Aarna Spa for its new surf treatment—a scrub and massage designed to ease the aches brought on by a day on the water.

Bribie Island, Queensland, Australia
An exploration of the world's best surf spots has to include Australia, where many legends and pros hail from—which makes sense giventhat the vast majority of the country’s population live along the ample coast. The waves here are legendary, as are many of the surf towns that have sprung up around them. One such example is Bribie Island, halfway between the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, and a favorite spot among Queensland locals. It’s the closest surf beach north of Brisbane, making it easy to explore the city’s famous art galleries and craft breweries once you've dried off. The best breaks here can be found at Woorim Beach, where swells average about three feet (though check the surf report before heading out: they can sometime get much larger). The best time to visit is between March and May.

Gateway Arch National Park, Missouri
When the National Park Service formed over 100 years ago, their main focus was on preserving natural spaces. But over time, the organization evolved to include preservation of sites with historical, scientific, and cultural significance.

Gateway Arch National Park, known as the “Gateway to the West,” is one of those sites, paying homage to Thomas Jefferson and the pioneers who helped shape the United States expansion into the west.

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Known for its craggy peaks that rise from the flat plains of Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park doesn’t appear to be very accessible from afar. But the park has rolled out a Self Evaluation Transition Plan that focuses on upgrading 17 areas to afford all visitors, regardless of ability, the opportunity to enjoy the park’s key experiences.

Devil’s Tower National Monument, Wyoming
Devil’s Tower, a prominent geologic feature that rises up 1,267 feet from Wyoming’s grasslands, is a sacred site for the Lakota, Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Shoshone, Crow, and Kiowa tribes that have inhabited the Black Hills for nearly 10,000 years. Now, it also serves as a recreational destination for hikers and wildlife enthusiasts.
