A Kemp’s ridley sea turtle hatchling release is scheduled for Sunday, July 14, 2024, at 6:45am on Malaquite Beach. Here are a few things to consider!

⚠️ IF THERE IS NO UPDATE TO THIS POST, THAT MEANS THAT THE HATCHLING RELEASE IS HAPPENING AS PLANNED. ⚠️

📞 Call the Hatchling Hotline at (361) 949-7163 before you drive out to the seashore to make sure the release is happening. The hotline is a recorded message you can call anytime day or night.

🌩️ Hatchling releases may be cancelled if the turtles have not hatched on the expected date, due to bad weather (ex. pouring rain, lightning on the beach, high winds), extreme high tides, or flooding over roadways, etc.

💲 Park entrance fees are required to enter the park year-round. To save time, purchase your entrance pass online BEFORE coming to the park.

🎟️ The $10 per vehicle one-day pass expires at midnight on the date of purchase. Do not purchase this pass the night before the hatchling release as it will be expired in the morning. Purchase your $10 per vehicle one-day pass the morning of the hatchling release only AFTER calling the calling the Hatchling Hotline to verify the release is happening.

🪪 Annual and lifetime pass holders do not need to pay the park entrance fee but must present their pass and ID at the entrance station.

🚗 Expect delays of up to 30-minutes entering the park. Hatchling releases take place on Malaquite Beach in front of the Malaquite Visitor Center. The visitor center is located 15-minutes south of the park entrance station. Once you arrive at the release site, you must park in a parking lot, walk across the visitor center deck (where the restrooms are located), down the ramp and out to the beach. Driving on Malaquite Beach to the hatchling release site is not permitted. If you have not been to the park before, take some time to look at a map of the park, and look over driving directions.

🐕‍🦺 Please leave your pets at home. Trained service animals, authorized under the ADA are allowed.

A Father's Day Tribute for All Dads:

This Father's Day, we celebrate the extraordinary men who wear the badge of "Dad." They may not wear capes, but their strength, guidance, and unwavering love are a superpower all their own.

To the dads who rise before the sun: Thank you for your tireless dedication to providing for your families. Your early mornings ensure their dreams can blossom.

To the dads who offer a listening ear: Thank you for your patience, the wisdom shared during life's challenges, and the safe space you create for them to express themselves.

To the dads who hold a special place in our hearts, though no longer by our side, your absence may leave an ache, but the love you instilled in us burns bright. We cherish the memories we hold close and your lessons echo in our minds, guiding us through life's journey.

To all dads: Thank you for your laughter, your tears, your bad jokes (we secretly love them!), and your unwavering love. You shape our world, one dad joke and life lesson at a time. Happy Father's Day!

Scientists have observed two Rice’s whales off the coast of Corpus Christi, an unusual sighting of the endangered species in the western Gulf of Mexico.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service said that scientists spotted the two whales during an aerial survey in April.
There are estimated to be fewer than 100 Rice’s whales left, according to NOAA, making the species “one of the most endangered whales in the world.”

They’re more often seen in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, near the coast of Florida, where surveys estimate there are about 50 whales in the area. Before the most recent observation, there had been only one confirmed sighting in the western Gulf, according to the Marine Mammal Commission.

The commission, an independent federal agency tasked with conservation of marine mammals, said they estimate there are only 51 of the whales in existence.

In February, NOAA said new research using passive acoustic recorders detected sounds from Rice’s whales off the Texas coast, indicating they might be more prevalent in the western Gulf than previously known.

It’s no joke, it may still be spring, but summer is in the air here at the national seashore. April marks the beginning of the busy beach season and sea turtle nesting season here in park. Here are some tips to make your beach season great this summer.

🐢 During the sea turtle nesting season (April to August), be alert for nesting sea turtles crawling across the beach during the day and night. If you see a sea turtle on the beach, do not disturb it. Mark the area and report the sighting by calling 1-866-TURTLE-5 (1-866-887-8535) or by notifying any park ranger.

👀 Keep an eye out for park bio techs and volunteers who are beginning daily beach patrols looking for nesting sea turtles.

🚙 Obey posted speed limits. Between March 1 and Labor Day, the speed limit is 15 MPH on South Beach and North Beach.

🏖️ Fill in beach holes after you build your sandcastle. Holes left on the beach poses a risk to beach drivers, emergency response staff, and sea turtles.

🚩 Check the beach flag posted at the Malaquite Visitor Center for the day’s forecasted rip current risk.

🗑️ Help keep our beaches clean. Free beach trash bags are available at the Malaquite Visitor Center.
