Today we experienced our first bribe with a police officer abroad. They had their little checkpoint setup in Chiang Mai, and we were on our scooter. Well we don't have our international license, which is silly because it is super easy to get, and if you travel EVER you should have one. Anyways, we don't. So they stop us and we play the naive tourist role while they play the tough cop role. Eventually we ask "well how much?", and that's when his answer of 200 baht comes out. Well it's 200 baht if we pay the ticket now, and 500 if we pay it at the police station. It was a tough choice, but we went with the pay now option.

We drove off, had some food, and then started approaching another blockage in a different street. Well we weren't falling for the trap this time, so we quickly turn off into a temple, and sneaked our way around. Boom.

Moral of the story is. Get your International License. It's just stupid to not have it, though kind of adventurous.

Did you know how MASSIVE manta rays are? And these are just reef mantas! Our dive in Nusa Penida, Bali may have been our favorite dive ever. These creatures make my heart leap in every good and exhilarating way possible. At one point, one swam so close over Andy, that he could have opened his hand and ran his fingers along the underside of the manta. Our guide had explained us before the dive, that human touch and our oils can damage mantas delicate skin, so that, along with the "divers don't touch anything" rule kept his hand closed 👀. (This rule is especially valid while diving in Australia where everything can kill you, mate). But really. There's something about these dudes, with their inquisitive eyes, gracefully flapping and seemingly joyful movements, it's almost as if their wise eyes could see into or souls, and we loved the connection we felt to them. Or maybe we're just animal lovers 😬 .

Um- all the wonderful air, shopping, food, coffee, art, sights and time well spent with family. Every culture we have experienced in the past 4 months has been vastly different and yet similar in so many ways, and we have been trying to soak in every moment of it. Thank goodness for photos and videos, which we will cherish and use to transport us back to these jam packed months of culture and beauty. Oh, and as always, the more open we are to whatever comes our way, the more incredible experiences we have encountered. Apparently in our lives, when our sense of control is stripped away, amazing things happen.

We were so excited to do one of the top rated hikes in the world, with spectacular views of Mt. Ngauruhoe (Mt. Doom from LOTR), steaming vents, geothermal lakes and snow capped peaks.
Andy Seiler and I couldn't help but carry along our DJI Phantom 4 with us, and were able to fly it in the most epic spot we'd ever seen. The photos don't completely do it justice, and we were blessed with a clear beautiful day, so check out the photos, look at our Instagram page for some of our absolute faves and book your flight to New Zealand! Thanks to Flying Kiwi Adventure Tours for taking us along with them on the North Island Tour!

Just a quick photo of some of the north island's beauty. Off in the distance you can see the sand dunes we boarded down this morning 👍🏼

Sometimes on bus tours you have to smash it out with a squat contest. (Passersby were a little confused/concerned) but we are loving seeing the north island of New Zealand with Flying Kiwi Tours ❤️

You guys our ACTUAL package arrived to us in New Zealand!!! After 4 weeks of daily phone calls with customs and B&H, talking to numerous people who all told us different things about GST and returns, all our babies are here with us now! Thank you for all your prayers and support- now we just want to go play with all these lenses👍🏼

Selfies with New Zealand cows is almost as good as it gets. These cows looked super happy to be noshing on the greener than green grass (no corn for them 👍🏼) and the dairy here is all the better for it.

Bucket List Destinations

New Zealand is one of a lot of people's bucket list trips, and here are some of our first favorite moments!

Things started off a bit rough for us in New Zealand... Incorrect gear sent to us, GST paid on the wrong order, no equipment to shoot our tour that was leaving the next morning, hot tea spilled on

Landed in Wellington after not finding delicious food at the Sydney airport. But if there wasn't Undelicious food maybe we wouldn't appreciate delicious food...Strangely enough, you have to eat BEFORE you get in the international terminal, or else eat McDonalds or super expensive food at some fancy airport restaurants. We opted for McDonalds and remembered why we don't ever eat there in the states. Ew.
But, the good news is, we arrived in Wellington, avoided a $400 fine for not declaring our hiking boots that we have never used and bought in the US, and are ready to sleep before our 40 minute flight to Nelson NZ tomorrow. Yay!

How to pack for a year overseas for every activity and climate.
Disclaimer-there are actually no perfect answers...

16/09/2016

Andy goofing off and getting that "quintessential" foot sunset photo on our dive boat. Nailed it.
We are leaving Cairns today to head back to Sydney and after 4 glorious days of diving every couple hours we are ready for sleep.
It's weird figuring out how to sustain life while traveling, because normally you don't want to spend a day sleeping in at a cool location, but being in vacation mode 24/7 and never sleeping isn't possible either.
We'll let you know when we have everything figured out... Ha. 🙄

Traveling the world while carrying (or dragging 😑) everything you need to work and enjoy time in ANY country/activity/climate is difficult. We thought we had done well, but turns out we still have too much stuff and we leave bits of it or throw it away everywhere we go. This is no trip for souvenirs, and we think of our photos as the best souvenirs. That being said, Japan has some of the best BEST stuff and I wanted to buy it all. Its really hard to not cave, and buy some of the darling things and cute clothes, but we just have to think about lugging it around with us and I usually put it right back. We often stare enviously at the chic travelers with just a carryon, but have to remind ourselves that we have camera gear and equipment and that we picked our things out knowing we wouldn't have a real home for a year. Still... Dragging this up and downs Japan's rail system (where are all the elevators?!) made us want to leave it all.
Onto our next adventure in... AUSTRALIA! 🐟🐠🐳

04/09/2016

Just in the tallest tower in the world, Skytree! Being that high made us wonder about an earthquake happening while we were in it (we see you Midwest friends who felt that quake yesterday) but the Japanese had already thought of that and made sure they built it according to Japan's frequent quakes with a stabilizer in the middle. Or something like that.
