The old Van Wert Church is one of the few existing wooden churches across the region. There are markers that tell some of the history, and how it was the original place 6 of the old churches in the area started their roots. Sam Jones who was a famous Evangelist of the day began his ministry here. He preached the latter part of the century. He lived until 1902. There is a cementery behind the church where many military veterans were buried from as early as the Revolutionary War.
