Even when not guiding, there is a lot of preparation. Here, getting ready for a tour on the footsteps of the uncles of my Canadian visitors. War diaries, maps, air and ground pictures and personal accounts.... It is always an exciting moment to put together all of these pieces.

I was incredibly lucky to have spent the 80th DDay Anniversary on the side of the Best Defense Foundation and the 48 WW2 American Veterans they brought to Normandy.
We shared a lot of great moments together with my colleagues Adrien of Normandy Detours, DDay 4 You - Magali Desquesne, Karine Poullard, Normandy Panorama and acsm_tours, surrounded by the enthusiasm of the thousands of locals and visitors that were here to honor the memory of those who died and whose who lived.

Following the footsteps of.... Marvin Kraus.

This month, I had the honor of guiding the relatives of Marvin Kraus, F Co, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division.

We visited Utah Beach and the famous Roosevelt Café where her niece signed the wall in honor of her uncle. We then visited Bloseville Temporary Cemetery before being welcomed by the Château de Servigny (where German General von Schlieben surrendered Cherbourg).

On the afternoon, we retraced the footsteps of Company F in its attack on Montgardon, next to La Hays-du-Puits. Marvin Kraus was killed in the bocage countryside on July 5th, 1944.

It was an immense honor to guide a tour alongside David Eisenhower (General Eisenhower grandson) and Julie Nixon Eisenhower. It was a real pleasure to exchange with them during the day on the DDay beaches.

Last week I had the opportunity to discover the Arromanches Mulberry Harbour from the sea. Getting so close to the Phoenix caissons gives a completely different appreciation of the huge engineering and work require for the achievement. What an experience !

A few days ago, another US airman missing in action in Normandy was identified thanks to DNA and the job of the Defense POW / MIA Accounting Agency:

Staff Sgt. Jackson M. Barbour, 19, of Memphis, Tennessee.

He was killed when his B17, "Danellen" crashed on December 20, 1942 near Bernières-sur-Seine. 8 out of 9 crew members died, 7 becoming "Missing in action" as the remains could not be identified.

Three sets of unknown soldiers believed to be crew members of the "Danellen" were excavated from the Normandy American Cemetery in 2019. They have been since identified as Pilot Dan Corson, Gunner Robert Ferris and now Gunner Jackson Barbour.

La Fière causeway, near Sainte-Mère-Eglise, last Monday under a winter storm. The marshes were flooded and the waves were crashing on the road. Impressive weather.
This causeway saw some of the most brutal fighting from June 6 to 9 between German troops and the American paratroopers.

During a travel to Morocco, I had the opportunity to take several Then and Now from Operation Torch, November 8th, 1942. Here are 2 of them, from the American landing in Fedala (today Mohammedia), close to Casablanca.
Quite early, the landing faced difficulties as the majority of landing crafts were damaged or stranded due to navigation problems and heavy surf.

WW2 | It was a real pleasure to be invited to follow the Dunkirk recce made by the staff of the The National WWII Museum. They assembled such a great team of guides, most of them are long time friends and colleagues. Emmanuel, our Dunkirk guide, was fabulous. The DDay 80th anniversary cruise designed by the museum next June is going to be a one-time opportunity for visitors to discover some WW2 battlefields with fantastic guides, historians and tour leaders !

🕊 Over the past few days, we have learn about the passing of several WW2 veterans that had strong connections with many here in Normandy:

🇺🇸 Robert Heurgue, 82nd Airborne, born in 1925 in Paris, visited his sister in Boston when the war started. He came back to France on June 6th, landing close to Turqueville. He passed on August 2nd.

🇬🇧 Reg Charles, 1st Ox and Buck, 53rd Infantry Division, born in 1923, landed in Arromanches at the end of July 1944. Fought through the battle south of Caen and Falaise. He passed on August 3rd.

🇺🇸 Vincent Sperenza, 101st Airborne, born in 1925, fought in Bastogne, but became a regular visitor in Normandy during the DDay commemorations. He passed on August 2nd.

🇫🇷 Désiré Le Fauconnier, 2nd Armoured Division, born in 1926 in Normandy, joined the 2nd French Armoured in July 1944. He passed on July 31st.

🇺🇸 I had the pleasure earlier this month of guiding the son of Ensign Henry Sullivan, commanding LCT-600 on Omaha Beach on DDay. We took the time to walk on Omaha Beach, Easy Red sector, where his father's actions helped to achieve a victory on the beach.

🎖Henry Sullivan's LCT was transporting 4 DD Amphibious tanks of the 741st Tank Battalion which were suppose to float ashore and land ahead of the first wave on Omaha. Orders were confirmed on the morning of DDay to launch the DD at sea, in spite of the bad weather and heavy sea. After a first tank sank, and after rescuing the crew, Sullivan decided to disobey the orders and took the remaining 3 tanks on the beach.

💥 Despite being under heavy fire, the 3 DD tanks were able to silence German positions. They became some of the only DD tanks on the beach, 26 of the other 28 DD of the 741st Tank Battalion having sank. The action of Henry Sullivan not only saved the life of the crews of the amphibious tanks, but also those of infantrymen on the beach.

🇬🇧🇫🇷 British veteran Roy Smith, 4th Dorset Regiment, landed on Sword Beach in late June 1944. He came back this June for the 79th anniversary. As Roy was feeling guilty that he didn't even get his feet wet when he landed, Taxi driver Michael from Taxi Charity For Military Veterans took him back to the beach to remove that guilt !

🙋‍♂️As Roy was getting out, I saw him waving to the beach, as a last Goodbye. I thought I hope he would see it again next year.

🌹 Roy sadly passed away 2 weeks after these picture were taken. We will remember him.

🇺🇸🇬🇧🇨🇦🇫🇷 The 79th Anniversary of DDay is over. It was a crazy week meeting dozens of veterans thanks to the job done by the Best Defense Foundation and the Taxi Charity For Military Veterans. It was an honor for me to volunteer for both these incredible organisations. I am looking forward to meeting everyone again for the 80th Anniversary.

🇺🇸🇸🇪 I had the great pleasure this month to take a group of Swedish veterans and former paratroopers on the footsteps of the 508th PIR, 82nd Airborne. We created a bespoke tour to specially cover the actions of these men around Picauville, visiting Hill 30 and the C-47 memorials.

🇨🇦 As the busy tourist season started, it is always time to learn more. This early May saw some visit south of Caen in the Canadians battlefields of Operation Spring, Totalize and Tractable. Some gorgeous landscapes in what use to be terrible battleground in the summer of 1944.

🇬🇧 A few days ago, I learnt about the passing of British Veteran Roy Maxwell, No. 4 Commando, who landed on Sword Beach on June 6th.
I had the pleasure of meeting him last year, for the 78th anniversary, at the British Memorial. He was a charming character, always smiling. Thank you for all you have done, Sir.

After the rains of the last few days, we took the opportunity of a beautiful day to visit the marshlands around the US Airborne Dropzones. Not only the landscape is stunning, but it gives a much better appreciation to understand the challenges faced by the paratroopers on June 6th and latter.

On top of this historical perspective, the marshlands are home to many different animals that we had the privilege to observe: swans, storks, moorhens, herons, nutrias, deer, etc...

"The planes droned over head, and I knew that my chute had opened though I could hardly look up to see it. I had suddenly slowed as the chute fully opened and I floated in space [...] I began to hear again as I never heard before. Alert to every sound as I floated earthward, I wondered whether I would be killed, wounded, or what? How, when, and where would I land? Were the Germans below with me in their gun sights? Would I see my buddies from the stick of 21 chutists? Can I get my rifle unpacked quickly and assembled fast enough?"

"The area was merely a succession of small inclosed pastures with a few orchards, likewise inclosed by hedgerows. Seldom could one see clearly beyond the confine of the field. It was difficult to keep physical contact with adjacent squads, platoons, or larger units. It was difficult to determine exactly where one was."

🇺🇲 This weekend was the 100-years anniversary of the American Battle Monuments Commission . To celebrate this event, the Normandy American Cemetery placed a candle on every headstone and remained open until night time.

🎖️ The Commission has been caring and maintaining both the graves and the memory of US servicemen and servicewomen who were buried overseas after giving their lifes to defend our democracy and freedom. It is an honor to work with the ABMC every time we bring visitors and relatives.

🇫🇷🇺🇸 A nice walk yesterday around Picauville, to prepare a visit this spring. An afternoon in the sunken lanes and hedgerow paths where men of the 82nd Airborne fought on DDay. A lovely and muddy moment !

Always a thank to Association U.S. Normandie , mémoire et gratitude doing a fantastic job in maintaining the memorials of the 82nd Airborne men.

🇫🇷🇩🇪 Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit Le Bourget, north of Paris. It was the site of bloody fighting in October and December 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War.

⛪️ On October 30th, after a day of fighting, Prussian troops are climbing the windows of the church to attack the French defenders still resisting. Commandant Brasseur, of the 128th Infantry Regiment is wounded in the arm. He and his men were forced to surrender after a desperate last stand.

🎖 At the end of the day, the French had more than a 1000 casualties. The German lost 473 men.
