COVAX: Working for Global Equitable Access to COVID-19 Vaccines

COVAX was created last year to ensure COVID-19 vaccines were made available around the world, with richer countries subsidizing costs for poorer nations. It’s co-led by a number of international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN children's charity, UNICEF.

The scheme hopes to distribute enough vaccines to protect at least 20% of the population in 92 low- or medium-income countries - starting with healthcare workers and the most vulnerable groups. Its initial goal was to provide two billion doses of vaccines worldwide in 2021, and 1.8 billion doses to 92 poorer countries by early 2022. This significant distribution of vaccines across the globe will prevent the loss of billions of dollars to the global economy each month.

Ghana was the first country to receive COVAX vaccines in February. Since then, more than 81 million doses have been delivered to more than 120 countries around the world, including Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia and Fiji.

COVAX works with governments and vaccine manufacturers around the world. Supporters include the US, the UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the UAE, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Portugal. These countries have pledged to donate both money and surplus doses from their own vaccine supplies.

US to relax air travel restrictions for vaccinated foreign passengers

Passengers who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will be able to fly to the US from anywhere in the world from November, bringing an end to the travel bans first imposed 18 months ago.

The White House has stated that travelers would have to show proof of full vaccination and a negative test taken in the previous three days, starting in early November. They will also have to wear a mask for the journey and share their phone number and email address for contact tracing.

The US Centers for Disease Control is drawing up a list of which vaccines will be accepted by the US. At this stage, vaccines made by BioNTech/Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson will be accepted. Officials have also stated that the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has been used widely in the UK and EU, is also likely to be accepted. But it is not yet clear whether other vaccines, such as those used in China and Russia, will be accepted by US authorities.
