What is a "single supplement" and why doesn't my company charge one?

Many travel sites advertise rates that are based on double occupancy, meaning the price they show you is for each person, with 2 people staying in 1 room. If you are a solo traveler and you want to have the room all to yourself, you'll often have to pay a "single supplement", which can be even more that the total of what 2 people in one room would be. I am seeing this trend on some cruise lines, although others are now starting to have solo rooms at a set price for a solo traveler.

I have decided to simply base our rates on every person having their own room, as most of my personal travels have been solo, and I have found it frustrating, and sometimes difficult, to decipher a company's actual costs. If you choose to come on a trip with us and have a friend or partner that you would like to share a room with on our upcoming Prague trip, we do offer a $400 per person discount from the stated price. That means that if you and
a friend join our Prague trip, the cost would be $3000 per person instead of the regular $3400 per person (airfare is not included in our pricing). That price includes hotel, breakfast everyday at the hotel, all tours/site tickets listed in the itinerary, and public transportation passes around the city for the time we are there.

Just some thoughts on international travel that I've learned through the years...

When purchasing your plane tkts, leave as much time as you can for connections. Some folks want to get to the destination as fast as possible, but short connection times make for HIGH STRESS. If you have a choice between 2 hours to change planes and 4 or 6 hours, pick the 6 hour layover. So much of air travel is truly out of our control (weather, mechanical issues, gate changes), so having plenty of time in the airport makes everything easier. I consider the travel time as part of the adventure.

Once you get to the airport, FIND YOUR GATE FIRST. Then you can wander around or go get food. Keep checking the big moniters to make sure there hasn't been a gate change or delay. Yes, you'll have the airline app on your phone and usually the airline will txt you any changes, but don't depand on that. Check your gate and the big moniters regularly.

Get to your departure gate early and stay there or very close by. Boarding usualy starts 30-45 mins before the flight is supposed to leave.

Great article about the DRAKE PASSAGE. We experienced 8 meter waves crossing to Antarctica back in March of 2023. I was sick for the entire 60 hour journey through the passage.

Was definitely worth the misery to get to Antarctica.

The Drake Passage, between the southern tip of South America and Antarctic, is infamous as one of the most dangerous journeys on the planet. But why is it so rough – and how can you cross safely?

When I was in Prague recently, i complained loudly to my travel companions about the lack of seating in a museum I visited.

Sometimes you need a little rest. Sometimes you just want to sit and really look at particular piece.

Glad to see something being done...

Part of a series of similar works, Finnegan Shannon’s blue bench "Do you want us here or not" (2020) is a response to the scarcity of seating found in some art museums and galleries. Shannon is an artist long active in conversations and actions that raise awareness of issues around access and disability in public spaces.

This work is part of the MFA's "Please Be Seated" program, which invites artists to make seating for the Museum that is also acquired as part of our permanent collection. Now on view, our exhibition "Tender Loving Care" in the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art features eight "Please Be Seated" locations ❤️
