Two Decades of Flavor: Corner Kitchen Marks 20 Years as an Asheville Culinary Icon
ASHEVILLE – Jan 24, 2024
In 2004, Asheville, NC, was at the beginning of the rise of a restaurant culture that would grow to be a culinary force in the state and the Southeast. That year, two friends opened a restaurant in a 110-year-old house in Historic Biltmore Village called Corner Kitchen. It was farm-to-table, a relatively new term then, and was conceived to be a place that would surprise its guests with both the quality of the food and the service.
On February 16, 2024, Corner Kitchen will celebrate 20 years of serving guests breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch. Joe Scully, a celebrated chef who had worked in New York and Atlanta before moving to Asheville, and Kevin Westmoreland, a lifelong resident of Asheville trained in management and customer service, brought their skills together to create what would become one of the most popular restaurants in Asheville, which was visited by guests from all over the world, including a former president.
Based on the idea of combining classic French cooking techniques with local ingredients and friendly, professional service, Corner Kitchen became a place where you could get delicious food and feel at home in shorts and a t-shirt or a coat and tie.
Joe and Kevin combined working in the restaurant with community outreach and involvement, which is one of the core values of Corner Kitchen and its sister restaurant, Chestnut. Being solidly part of the Asheville community was and is an important part of their culture.
During the month of February, Corner Kitchen will be serving a menu that will include many of the most popular items from the past two decades, including many from the early years. Among the highlights are sweet potato lobster tacos crafted with jicama carrot slaw, black bean corn salsa, chimichurri aioli, and micro cilantro. Complementing the nostalgic lineup are the nishiyama crab cakes, made up of ginger sticky rice, napa cabbage, Asian salad, toasted sesame seeds, wasabi mayo, and a hint of sriracha. The sweet mustard-glazed meatloaf will be a sweet and savory trip down memory lane consisting of beef, pork, lamb, toasted pine nuts, sun-dried tomatoes, cheddar grits, collard greens, honey mustard, molasses, and Beurre Blanc.
All throughout February, join Corner Kitchen in celebrating this milestone starting at 5 p.m. daily. Here's to 20 years of exceptional dining and community spirit at Corner Kitchen, where every meal feels like coming home. To make a reservation, visit www.thecornerkitchen.com."
