Fishing the Tides : 2025’s Rare Events
Captain Rich Damianos Explains How the Rare 2025 Lunar Standstill Will Impact Charlotte Harbors Tides and fishing
For anglers in southwest Florida, Charlotte Harbor is a renowned fishing destination, home to sprawling mangroves, rich seagrass beds, and productive oyster bars. But in 2025, this iconic estuary will experience a celestial event that could elevate your fishing game: the major lunar standstill.
This rare astronomical phenomenon, which only happens once every 18.6 years, will make the tides more extreme than usual, creating unique opportunities—and challenges—for fishermen. To understand what it means for your time on the water, we spoke with Captain Rich Damianos of Reel Rich Fishing Charters in Punta Gorda, Florida. With years of experience guiding anglers through the intricate waterways of Charlotte Harbor, Captain Rich is the perfect person to explain how to take advantage of this rare event.
What Is a Lunar Standstill?
“Most people have heard of daily tides, but few realize the moon works on longer cycles too,” Captain Rich explains. “One of the most important for fishermen is the 18.6-year lunar nodal cycle, which changes the angle of the moon’s orbit relative to Earth. When the angle is steepest—like it will be in 2025—we get what’s called a major lunar standstill. It’s like cranking the dial on the moon’s influence on our tides.”
During a major lunar standstill, the moon’s gravitational pull causes the high tides to rise higher and the low tides to fall lower than usual. The effect is most noticeable in shallow coastal systems like Charlotte Harbor. “For fishermen, it means everything from where the fish are to how they feed might be different,” Rich adds.
The last major lunar standstill occurred in 2006, and the next won’t happen until 2044. “It’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity for many anglers,” Rich says. “You don’t want to miss it.”
How the Lunar Standstill Impacts Tides and Fishing
According to Captain Rich, the stronger tidal swings during a lunar standstill significantly influence fish behavior.
“During high tides, you’ll see fish move into places they normally can’t access, like way back into mangroves or onto submerged grass flats,” he explains. “Redfish and snook love to follow the tide into these shallow areas to feed on crustaceans and baitfish.”
But the opposite happens during low tides. “When the water pulls out, fish are forced into deeper channels, pockets, and around structures like oyster bars,” he says. “It concentrates them, which can make them easier to target.”
The increased water movement also stirs up nutrients from the estuary floor, attracting baitfish and, in turn, predators like tarpon, trout, and snook. “It’s like ringing the dinner bell,” Rich laughs. “The stronger currents mean more activity, and that’s great news for anglers.”
Charlotte Harbor: A Unique Fishing Ground
Charlotte Harbor is one of the largest estuaries on Florida’s Gulf Coast, encompassing over 270 square miles of waterways. Its intricate network of creeks, flats, and mangrove-lined shorelines creates a perfect habitat for a wide variety of game fish.
“Charlotte Harbor is special because it’s a mix of freshwater from rivers and saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico,” Captain Rich explains. “The tides are critical for maintaining this balance. They regulate salinity, flush out pollutants, and keep the ecosystem healthy. When you have a major lunar standstill, it amplifies all of these processes.”
For anglers, that means understanding the harbor’s unique features becomes even more important. “During extreme high tides, you might find redfish or snook way back in the mangroves. During low tides, the same fish will be in deep pockets along the flats or near oyster bars,” he says. “You have to follow the water—and the fish.”
Adjusting Your Fishing Strategy
Captain Rich emphasizes that preparation is key to making the most of the 2025 lunar standstill. “The tides are going to be stronger and more extreme than usual, so you need to adjust your approach,” he says.
Here are Rich’s top tips for fishing during a lunar standstill:
1. Plan Around the Tides:
“Always check a detailed tide chart before heading out. The best fishing happens during strong tidal flows, which coincide with feeding times. During a lunar standstill, these periods can be more pronounced.”
2. High Tide Strategies:
“When the water is up, focus on mangrove shorelines, seagrass flats, and flooded backwaters. Use surface lures, live shrimp, or cut bait to tempt snook, redfish, and even juvenile tarpon. These fish will be actively feeding in areas that are normally too shallow.”
3. Low Tide Strategies:
“As the tide pulls out, target deeper holes, channels, and structures like oyster bars or drop-offs. Fish will be concentrated here, making them easier to catch. Jigs and soft plastics work great in these conditions.”
4. Adapt to Turbid Water:
“The stronger currents during a standstill will stir up sediment, making the water murkier. That’s when you want to use lures with strong scents or noise, like rattling plugs, to help fish locate your bait.”
5. Follow the Baitfish:
“Keep an eye on bait schools. If you see mullet jumping or pods of baitfish, chances are predator fish aren’t far behind. Use cast nets or sabiki rigs to catch live bait and match what the fish are feeding on.”
Seasonal Opportunities
The timing of the 2025 lunar standstill aligns perfectly with peak fishing seasons in Charlotte Harbor.
“In the spring and summer, you’ve got tarpon running through the harbor, along with snook and redfish actively feeding,” Rich says. “The stronger tides can make these fish even more accessible.”
During fall and winter, the amplified tides could enhance migration patterns for species like trout and redfish, concentrating them in estuarine areas. “You might see some of the best fishing we’ve had in years,” Rich predicts.
The Bigger Picture
The lunar standstill isn’t just an event for fishermen—it’s a reminder of how interconnected nature is. “The moon, the tides, the fish—it’s all part of a bigger system,” Captain Rich says. “When you understand how it works, you can really use it to your advantage.”
He also points out that the stronger tides can benefit the environment in the long run. “More water movement helps flush out pollutants and bring in fresh nutrients. It’s a reset button for the estuary,” he says.
Don’t Miss the Opportunity
Captain Rich encourages anglers to embrace the unique conditions the 2025 lunar standstill will bring. “This isn’t something you see every day—or even every decade,” he says. “If you love fishing, now’s the time to sharpen your skills, study the tides, and get out there.”
