Stop #40

We stayed one night in Tupelo, MS which happens to be the birthplace of Elvis Presley. They have a park dedicated to his early childhood which was beautifully done. We also went downtown to where he bought his first guitar 🎸, Tupelo Hardware. While downtown, we ran into the Tupelo High School Homecoming rally. What fun that was to see!! We also had time to visit some Civil War battlefields. What a day!!

We spent a few days in Little Rock, Arkansas. Our campground was right on the Arkansas River across from the downtown area. All we had to do to explore downtown was to walk across a bridge…so convenient!!

Stop #39

Our last National Park on our journey home was to visit Hot Springs in Arkansas. I have to say, it’s not your typical National Park! The park is along their Main Street which has early 20th-century bathhouses built atop natural hot springs. We enjoyed hanging out at one of the bathhouses and so glad they preserved this historic area!!

Stop #38

Another one night stop in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and a busy day of travel. Once we got to the campsite, we immediately went to the Oklahoma City Memorial Museum. What an amazing museum and memorial to the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing. The museum has the right mixture of what happened that horrible day, how the city and nation responded, the path of justice for the victims and so many beautiful tributes. The outside memorial continues to honor the victims in so many unique ways. It’s definitely a must see if in Oklahoma City. After visiting the museum and memorial gardens, we then headed downtown to see the state capitol.

Stop # 37

We had a one night stop in Amarillo, Texas right next to the infamous Cadillac Ranch. Since 1972, there have been 10 Caddies nose down into the dirt, all at the exact same angle that are right on Route 66. It was a little disappointing to see how the paint has ruined the Caddies. Some would say it’s ‘Artwork’.

Stop #36

Our next adventure was in Santa Fe, NM which was established in 1608 and is the oldest capital city in the United States. We had some fun excursions: Taos, where we saw a historic Pueblo Adobe homes then in Los Alamos, we saw the site of where the original atomic bomb was built and in Albuquerque, we went to the balloon festival museum. We also had lots of fun at Bandelier National Monument, which was totally interactive and amazing!

Petrified Forest National Park, 9 of 9 on the Grand Loop of National Parks

Petrified Forest National Park is in northeastern Arizona. It has many different types of landscapes which are all beautiful in their own way. Loved seeing the famous Painted Desert Inn which was built in the 1930’s. Back then it was a very popular stop on Route 66.

Stop #35, part 2

Probably one of the most beautiful towns we saw on our journey out west. Sedona is surrounded by the most gorgeous mountains and the downtown area is lots of fun and has beautiful artwork to enjoy. We loved it so much we went there on 2 separate days to take in all the beauty. Our first day we hiked to a cave and the other day was to check out the downtown area. Another plus, the drive from Flagstaff was gorgeous too!

Stop #35, part 1

Since today happens to be National Public Lands Day it’s the perfect day to share our visit at Grand Canyon South rim. Grand Canyon is very sentimental to me and definitely my most visited National Park. For the past year we had planned to hike down Bright Angel Trail which meant doing a lot of hiking to ensure we were up for the challenge. We made it down to the 1st rest house which is 1.5 miles one way, 1200’ elevation change. I wanted to go further but unfortunately, Lew was not feeling well so we didn’t push our luck. I have to say, the hike back up was a breeze!! All of our previous hikes had paid off!! We spent 2 nights in a cabin at Bright Angel Lodge which was absolutely amazing!!

Stop #33, part 4

We continued our “mini vacation” and stayed 2 nights in Zion National Park. Wow! Zion is impressive the second you pass through the entrance of park with vast views of different geological formations. We really enjoyed hiking The Narrows, our most unique hike on our trip so far. If you ever have a chance to visit Zion, The Narrows is a must do!!!

Stop #33, part 3

We took a “mini vacation” from Bryce to visit 2 additional National Parks. The first park we went to was the Grand Canyon, North Rim. It’s not quite as spectacular as the south rim since it’s much smaller, but still amazing views!

Hoodoo you love?! 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Bryce Canyon National Park of course!!!

Bryce Canyon was probably one of the most unique national parks we’ve visited. Bryce has the world’s highest concentration of Hoodoo amphitheater’s which are absolutely stunning. We enjoyed the views from above and down below…all majestic!!

Stop #32 - Part 4

Our next adventure was to check out a Dead Horse Point State Park which is very close to Canyonlands NP. We arrived late afternoon to do some hiking and watch the sunset. This is the park where they filmed Thelma and Louise’s infamous scene when they drive off the canyon.

Stop #32 - Part 3

We visited Canyonlands National Park which is fairly close to Moab. This park is huge and is divided into 3 districts: Island in the Sky, The Maze and The Needles. We visited the Island in the Sky District and took two hikes to explore this beautiful area. The other two are quite the distance away and there are no roads into those areas and require a backcountry permit.

Stop #32 - Part 2

We drove from Moab, about 2.5 hours, to see Capital Reef National Park. We learned a fun fact!! The large red rock cliffs we’ve been seeing are called “Wingate Sandstone” and is quite prevalent in this area of Utah. This park is one of the smaller parks that we visit but they have a scenic road with amazing views. Also unique to this park is that they have a historical town, Fruita, at the base of all surrounding mountains and it’s an oasis where they still grow all types of fruit.

25/08/2023

We visited Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park while in Montrose, CO. Fun fact, it gets part of its name, Black Canyon, because the canyon is so deep and narrow that sunlight only reaches to the bottom when the sun is directly overhead which is only for 33 mins per day! It is also one of the least visited national parks but so glad we did not miss this gem!!

Funny story…we were running errands in Grand Junction and saw a sign for “Colorado National Monument”. Since we had some extra time, we decided to check it out as to what we thought was going to be a man made monument. Let’s just say we were very wrong, but what a beautiful surprise!!

Stop #31

We continued our Colorado journey spending a week in Montrose which was centrally located to so many towns we wanted to see: Telluride, Ouray and Sliverton. This is area is nestled around the most beautiful mountains and is also the home of the “Million Dollar Highway”. Wait until you see the sunset pictures in Telluride…unreal!!

While in this area, we also went to a National Park and a National Monument, but those two will be a separate post.

Montrose, CO: 8/8-15
