INTERNATIONAL WOMANS DAY.

THE KNITTERS WALK

I thought it fitting today to remember, with pride, the great Rosses women who every fortnight took the long walk, with their knitting, to the merchants in Glenties.

They left home early, from all over the Rosses, timing their walk to arrive at the Gweebarra Estuary at low tide to wade across the estuary with their knitting held aloft.

They concluded their business in Glenties and collected their wool for the next fortnight and rushed back to the estuary before the tide came fully in and made their way home.

For the next fortnight they cared for their families and their homes, often alone when the men were away at the seasonal work in The Lagan or Scotland, and every chance they got they knitted.Their hands were never idle.
A fortnight later they would leave their homes early, in all weather, and the long walk to Glenties would begin again.

A Sunday on Iniscaoraigh Island ( The island of the sheep)
A day out today on Iniscaoraigh with my walking group to share with you all.
A lovely walk on a now deserted Rosses island, once home to a thriving population until they were forced to leave their island home in 1955.
The Arranmore Ferry took us to and from the island and Mary Rodgers and Christopher Doherty and sons entertained us with lovely music while we were there.
A day to remember.

FAIRY CUPS

A lovely little white wild plant.

It grows on mosses and lichens. The little cup shaped petals catch the raindrops so it acts like a watering system for the plant that it is growing on.

We came across them yesterday on our walk at Termon. Keep a lookout for them along the country roadsides when you are out for your walk.
