It's so HOT, the chickens are laying hard boiled eggs!

A heatwave: A prolonged period of abnormally hot weather. Western Australia has had several heatwaves over the last couple of months and today (18th February 2024) at Perth airport it reached 44.6C at 11.43am making it the hottest day in February since 1977 at 44.9C.

Geraldton, a coastal city in the Midwest region of WA (424kms north of Perth) smashed a 70 year old record today with a temperature of 49.3C, making it officially the hottest day on record.

Carnarvon WA reached 49.9 creating a new record for the town today also smashing their old record of 47.8C. Shark Bay also recorded a record breaking temperature of 49.8C well above the previous 47.8C.

The days have been bloody hot for some!

The highest temperature recorded for Perth WA is 46.2C on February 23rd 1991.
10th July 1913 at Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley in the United States has recorded the highest registered air temperature on earth is 56.7C.

Heatwaves are a force to be reckoned with!

There's Gnome Place like home!

Legend has it Gnomesville located in the Ferguson Valley of country Western Australia began in the 1990s after a local resident placed a single garden gnome in the hollow of a tree. It is estimated that there are now over 5000 different gnomes living among the gum trees in Gnomesville & this number is continuously growing.

Gnomesville is now a popular tourist attraction with visitors from all over the world coming to add to the community.
Fascinating to wander around the place which is only a 30 minute drive from Wellington Dam & is 36 kms from Bunbury.

Is a gnome male or female? A gnome has always been a man! Usually portrayed as little old men with long white beards, smoking pipes or as manual workers wielding spades, tools & wheel barrows
Gnomes are also known as a symbol of good luck.

The Wellington Dam wall is 34 metres high & 367 metres wide. Cleaners abseiled up the wall to prepare it while builders designed a special scaffolding platform to paint the mural.

Guido Van Helten's 8,000 square metre mega-mural "Reflections" on the Wellington Dam Wall is inspired by local stories & photographs.
Guido the artist is an Australian born visual artist & photographer. It took four months to complete & features images of Collie mine workers, families playing in water, Aboriginal children & other scenes taken from actual photographs.

In the 1930's, during the Great Depression, there was a drive to fund public works to provide jobs for thousands of people desperate for work.

A dam on the Collie River was proposed as a way to extend the Southwest irrigation network & to encourage further expansion in agriculture.
Construction started in 1931. The new settlers named the Collie River Valley region "Wellington" in honour of the Duke of Wellington.

For many years the Wellington Dam was a source of drinking water for inland towns in the Great Southern region.

Black Diamond Lake is located only 5 minutes from Collie. The lake has become one of Collie's most Instagram destination. With calm turquoise waters, it is the perfect place to relax on a sunny day. Not suitable for swimming due to past mining activities.

It was formerly an open cut mine site that ceased operation in the 1950's & the pit was filled with water creating a pit lake.

Life is best when your camping!

Collie is 200kms from Perth & 50kms inland from the coastal city of Bunbury. Named after its European discoverer, Dr Alexander Collie who explored the coast south of the new Swan River settlement in 1829.

Lake Kepwari is 15kms from Collie. I stayed at campsite 1, size 15m x 10m compacted gravel site. Each campsite had a picnic table with fire ring. Pit toilets were available throughout Lake Kepwari.
I arrived in 32 degree heat & the day was really hot. But come late night & early morning the temperature dropped to 9 degrees & it was freezing.
Cost was $15 adult.

On 1st February 2024 Geraldton recorded a temperature of 46.5c. Its record is 47.3c. Collie was heating up with a temp of 42.4 as another heatwave was emerging.

Make only memories
Leave only footsteps

High & low tides refer to the regular rise & fall of the oceans waters. Low tide is when the water retreats to its lowest level, moving away from the shore. It takes 6 hours for the water at the shore to go from low to high. Here at Dunsborough low tides makes great walking adventures for all to enjoy.

Very few animals live in the sand & the sand comes in lots of different colours.

Old Dunsborough Beach is usually calm, protected & very popular with young families & is enclosed by a shark net in summer. The boat ramp near by is very popular.

Why do you people swim at Saltwater beaches? Because Pepper beaches would make them sneeze!

Peppermint Grove Beach (Peppy Beach to locals) is located near Capel, commencing at Wonnerup.
At Busselton the foreshore beach is very popular for its safe swimming. Owing to protection from Cape Naturaliste it generally receives very low swells & only small wind waves.
Nearly 97% of the worlds water is salty or undrinkable.

Life takes you down many paths, but my favourite ones lead to the beach!
January school holidays - Busy! Busy! Busy! Instead of camping over two days I went beach sightseeing.
Geographe Bay Coastline (90kms long) is from Cape Naturaliste past the town of Dunsborough & Busselton ending near the city of Bunbury. The bay is protected from the rough seas of the Indian Ocean.
The first recorded European discovery & charting of Geographe Bay was by the French ships - Geographe & Naturaliste under the command of Nicolas Baudin (1801-1803).

Logue Brook Dam was opened on 8th November 1963 to supply water for irrigation.
Dam your clever! Dam it all! A dam fine day! Admire the dam view! Dam good times!

Nowadays it is a prime location for camping & is a designated water ski area popular to all water sports on offer. You can swim but the edges of the dam have a clay like sand substance & makes it very slippery to enter & exist the waters.

Also has been used by recreational scuba divers in previous years, when the dam was full capacity. The divers were able to descend to a maximum depth of 42 metres (138 feet).

Remember how far you have come, not just how far you have to go. You are not where you want to be, but neither are you where you used to be.

Harvey Dam is a great place for a picnics & is the location of a fantastic amphitheater for concerts.
The original weir was part of the first irrigation scheme in WA & construction started in 1914. It supplies the Harvey & Waroona irrigation districts.

Did you know the Harvey Dam is restocked annually with trout but is closed to fishing from July 1 to August 31 each year. How do you communicate with a fish? Drop it a line!
