Do you feel like an alternative to the Camino?

Then join me for this guided 90-km/ 56-mile slow stroll along the stunning Southern coastline of the island of Menorca (the Cami de Cavalls)
Menorca is the third largest island in the Balearic archipelago after Mallorca and Ibiza. It is a small piece of unspoiled paradise. I was fortunate to spend 2 years of my life here and now I want to share this jewel in the Mediterranean with you.
This walk will take you along some of the most breathtaking white sandy beaches, private rocky calas with crystal clear turquoise waters and of course the stunning green forest and the islands luscious pastures dotted with inquisitive Menorcan sheep.

For those history buffs out there, Menorca is steeped in history, its bronze age past is still evident with its famous Talyot sites and we mustn´t forget the incredible Isabel II Mola fortress which was built built in the 19th century to keep the British at bay.

This imposing fort located at the entrance of the port is a must see, and you can enjoy a leisurely self-guided tour with audio in English, one of many possible activities available for our afternoons here.
Menorca also has one of the longest natural harbors in the world.

It is 5 kilometers (3 miles) long and is lined with a wide variety of impressive yachts and buzzing international restaurants and Cafes to suit everyones taste.

Are you ready to experience the Spiritual Variant on the Spanish section of the Camino Portuguese.

This 110 km route (plus a 36 km boat ride into Padron) is stunning, you will be walking along some of the most breathtaking coastline in Northern Spain before heading inland to join the stone and water route through the tranquil Spiritual Variant (Variante Espiritual).

This route is considered to be one of the most Spiritual in Galicia and promises some incredible views but don´t be fooled, the hilly terrain does involve some challenges and some extra effort from you (and plenty of photograph stops). Still, imagine how proud you will feel as you walk into Santiago and claim your well-deserved Compostela.

This alternative route is called the Spiritual Variant because it follows the final part of the long journey of the remains of Apostle St James hence why the boat ride from Vilanova de Arousa to Pontecesures is such an important part of this pilgrimage.

This offers you a unique pilgrim experience that few choose to do, but even less regret doing. We look forward to you joining us for what will be an unforgettable experience.

SOME FACTS ABOUT THIS WONDERFUL ROUTE

➜It is an alternative to the traditional Portuguese way
➜It offers some of the most beautiful scenery in this part of Galicia
➜This route is part of the ´Ruta de Pedra e da Agua due to the many water mills you will discover along the way
➜The highest point is the Monte Redondo which is a significant climb.
➜ The monastery of Armenteira was founded by monks of Clairvaux around 1151.

About this Camino Slow Stroll

Are you ready to experience this Spiritual route of 119kms/ 74 miles which stretches through the Galician countryside, along the breathtaking Costa de Morte to Finisterre via Magical Muxia?

This unique route starts in Santiago, rather than finishing in Santiago and pilgrims can walk in two directions either via Finisterre to Muxia, or the opposite way (which is what you will be doing) , plus you will be eligible to collect both of your Muxia and Finisterre Compostelas which is a wonderful achievement.

Please note that uou will not qualify for the Santiago Compostela as we will be returning from Finisterre to Santiago by Taxi. So, if the Compostela is important to you then sadly this is not the trip for you.

Now, I would like you to close your eyes for a moment and imagine yourself sitting on the rocks at Muxia lighthouse listening to the waves in a hushed silence with your fellow pilgrims watching the sun set over the Atlantic as you contemplate your journey so far. This is an incredibly spiritual experience that you will not be able to enjoy on any other Camino in my very humble opinion.

Finisterre pre-dates Christianity so why not follow us as we walk in the footsteps of hundreds of thousands of pagans before you, to the end of the world where they believed that the sun died and the worlds of the dead and living grew closer. Ancient pilgrims used to burn their clothes here before making their return journeys (with fresh clothes I assume 🤔) (for obvious reasons this is no longer permitted)

I will not lie, this route is quite hilly and definitely requires physical strength, however what I love about it is that it offers you the chance to walk a road less travelled which as we know, is quite a novelty these days. So, I would not recommend this to anyone with physical injuries and or someone who has not prepared themselves physically.

Now I'm not very good at expressing myself but there are sometimes I just have to share my feelings about the Camino.

The group I am walking with now are in their 60s 70s and 80s and they are so inspirational. They make me proud to be a woman in my twilight years.

They came to the Camino with no expectations so they will never experience disappointment, they find joy in everything, the countryside, the weather, the animals, the birds the trees...everything. Even when they are sick or unable to walk they are grateful and kind.

These are hugely accomplished women, business women, nurses, all round great women grandmother's, step mothers, mothers, sisters and wives from very different backgrounds and yet here they are walking across Spain (for some the first time in Europe or even out of the US), following in the footsteps of millions of pilgrims before them to reach Santiago de Compostela.

Today I had a moment. We all entered the church San Tirso in Palas de Rei for our moments of comptemplation and I remembered my dad. Father's day came and went and I was busy but today I shed a tear and said to my dad. "Dad you would be so proud of me, of what I have achieved, I just wish you were here to see it" Ronald Francis Price taken to soon, thankyou for being my hero, I miss you.

It's almost as if we have been friends forever ❤️ I love the openness of our groups, how we open our hearts and share our life stories

I have a few special mentions today Susan Silvas (you know why) Alison Teal for being so brave, Mary Sue Galvin for carrying a bottle of albariño in her rucksack. 🤣🤣 Margaret for rocking her new poncho.

One of our nurses Sarah Johnson Armstrong for keeping it real Dawn Pollard for keeping going despite everything, Camille McInerney for always going left when I say right and Val Watts for simply being the kind woman she is❤️

Hi everyone, it's Carol here, fresh from finishing guiding on the Camino Finisterre.

I just want to reassure you about something that bothers many of you and that is judgement.

If I were a newbie or potential pilgrim reading the Camino Facebook comments today I would be terrified of being judged.

I have seen some awful comments designed to ridicule people asking very reasonable questions and it saddens me.

But let me reassure you, these are keyboard warriors and need to be ignored, in my experience this does not happen on Camino.

This week has reminded me how wonderful the camino community is and how respectful too.

On our Guided Camino Finisterre it is necessary to stay in two albergue dormitories due the remoteness of the walk, and truth be told it was a little daunting for me as guide and for the other women in the group, especially as it was their first experience, you can imagine my concern.

I am pleased to say they had a fantastic experience. We were the only ones transporting bags..any judgement?.NO. We were worried about a sleepless night and I can't deny there was some snoring but with an eye mask and ear plugs that was not an issue. Oh and the beds were amazing with cosy duvets (take a silk liner)

Were we nervous about getting undressed and dressed again?..yes definitely a little. There are showers and bathrooms if you want privacy but truly noone bats an eyelid.

Every pilgrim in that room went to bed by10pm and every pilgrim who got up early was mindful of everyone in the dormitory and packed their rucksacks downstairs.

Were we the oldest there...NO

Did we meet some fabulous pilgrims ..ABSOLUTELY.

Come with no expectations and an open heart and you will have a life changing experience

Day I think it's 9 but it could be blursday due to camino amnesia. Wow, that was a real challenge today, up , up and up some more but I'm so proud of us all because we have visibly become stronger over the last 8 days and the heavy breathing has reduced itself to a steady breath (more or less)

Another beautiful day with a great group of women. Now a short siesta and a dip in the pool.
