When in Lyon, do what the locals do, eat local foods. BretonTravels last tour of our southern France river cruise included a taste of Lyon. Lyon is the gastronomy capital of France, we agree. We visited four separate establishments. Our first two stops were sweets. We visited a pastry shop, sampling Pralisslma. Our second stop was a local chocolate shop, Louis Simart Artisan Chocolatier (we sampled three types of chocolates). Our third stop was our favorite, a cheese establishment, Mon's Fromager Affineaur. We tried three cheeses (2 goat cheese, 1 cow). They were so awesome. Our last stop was at a local French grocery establishment, Epicerie Abel. Here we tried lentil dish, pate, and two types of salami. If you travel to France, Lyon needs to be part of our journey.

Our adventures continued today, our last day before flying back to the USA. Tour 1, this morning, stopped in a very small medieval village (I don't recall the name) and then to a chateau, Chateau de Vareness. When you read about French vinyards, this type of chateau produces a visual that is incredibly fun. During our visit, we visited with a representative of the vineyard/chateau. We tasted 4 types of wines, two white, two reds. The wine tasting was an incredible experience. One thing that amazed us was the amount of grapes being grown in this region. They are everywhere, including sides of the hills.

BretonTravels took a second tour today. Our stop, the charming village of Perouges. This village is on a hilltop includes several very interesting features including a fortified church, bell tower, medieval homes and shops. The streets and pathways are rugged cobblestones. This village was built in the 6th and 7th century. At point in the past, the village was deteriorated and unoccupied, however an investor purchased the village and has made improvements.

This morning, BretonTravels we went on a panoramic view of Lyon, France. The highlight of the morning was the visit to the Basilique Saint-Martin d’Ainay. Following an awesome tour of the basilica, we visited the old town of Lyon. It was incredibly beautiful and full of history. A little about Lyon, according to About France (2019), "Lyon, the capital city in France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, sits at the junction of the Rhône and Saône rivers. Its center reflects 2,000 years of history from the Roman Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules, medieval and Renaissance architecture in Vieux (Old) Lyon, to the modern Confluence district on Presqu'île peninsula. Traboules, covered passageways between buildings, connect Vieux Lyon and La Croix-Rousse hill."

BretonTravels sure has seen a lot of vineyards on their trip. When in France, you must take vineyard photos. This is one of thousands of vineyards we have seen since we started our journey. This particular region, the grapes are used for port and white wines. It is close to harvest time here.
